Unit 3b (Genres) |
In this brief you will continue to respond to artist's work using self set themes inspired by others work. You are required to produce a series of images that reflect a genre or area of photography. You will also show a body of experimentation through different camera and post editing techniques.
Unit 3a (Journeys) |
Your assignment is based on the theme of journeys; please think about this theme carefully. You could think of the topic in a number of different ways. Over summer you maybe going on different types of journeys, could be on holiday or even a simple route from A to B. You might think about daily routine, travelling and the locations, characters and themes that conjures up. You could also think in an abstract way – like the journey through life, dreams, passing of time etc. and other journey which we can go on as humans. You might focus on one specific person's journeys.
Unit 4 Exam 2011 |
#1 – To explore and develop my initial skills in film processing and to create some of the really appropriate tones that I feel would suit this question.
#2 - Explore the concept of fashion and to take influence from fashion photographers and the alignment and connection models have with the camera. Also, to be aware of focus and the use of both depth of field and the creative use of the camera.
#3 – Show a range of ability by looking at both location and studio work and deciphering what works best for this question, if not both.
themes; fashion, tone and shadowing, and vulnerability.

Jake Ditchfield (Above) To create this image I have layered two images together, then with some ink backgrounds I have created and I have layered them together. I then used curves on both the black and white image so that the black when darker and made the white lighter so that the colour was easier to see. I like how these colours that I have used are complimentary colours. I think that they work well in this image.

Vicky Waller - Light and Shadow (Below) using artificial light in order to create interesting lighting and shadowing on the face and the body. My aim is to explore the human form using interesting lighting compositions. The lighting on this image is very different as the model is cupping the candle preventing most of its light to escape and instead it all become focused on the left hand side of the face. I think this light and shadowing looks very interesting |
Michael Mitchell - Combing Images
Kelsey Avis - Combining images
My exam was developed around the theme of memories. I intended to capture the sobre peacefulness of a graveyard using only Black and white imagery and strong contrasting tones.
I chose to take photos of the graveyard because I thought that the images would work well when combining them with natural forms. I chose different texture and patterns from the gravestones so that when they where combined with another image the outcome would look textured. The edition of the flowers in the images help to create a mood and atmosphere in the piece.
Zoe Papiz - Combining images
I have chosen a selection of photographs for my final images. I wanted it to showcase the variety of techniques I have used during this whole project. These examples of freelensing, reverse lens macro, use of close up filters and layering images. I have also used compositions inspired by Uta Barth. I have tried to pick out my strongest images, using scans of my failed film prints and fabrics to enhance and further develop the photographs.

In this brief you will continue to respond to artist's work using self set themes inspired by others work. You are required to construct a series of narrative of images that connect together using a story or theme. For inspiration you should first examine artists and photographers and perhaps film makers working in the narrative/sequential genre. The theme 'Looking Through' can be interpreted in a number of ways.

“the only way the witch reached Rapunzel was to climb up her hair and through the window”
I developed my edit further by placing figurines into the models hair. I achieved this by scanning in little army tools. After up loading the scanned image into Photoshop I used the magic eraser to get rid of the background and the eraser tool to take away the guns. I then layered this onto the previous edit. Then by using the layering options an using the curves I was able to get a more metallic effect to the lighter toys. I find this edit very effective as it is symbolic to the part in the story where the other characters climb Rapunzel’s hair. The different layers in the hair create rich texture which makes it interesting to look at.

I decided to take photographs in the Lake District as there numerous lakes, mountains and forests to photograph. The photograph I took were a mixture of landscapes, moss and trees. I felt the photographs of moss were the strongest, so I mainly edited them. I made changes to these photographs by lowering the saturation to tone down the green moss, and I also added photo filters which gave subtle hints of different colours.

I wanted to capture a lighter mood and still shows interaction even though there is only one person in the frame. I chose to use it for that reason and because it reflects a sense of friendship, and conversation. I believe the three images convey a natural look and a reflective feel.

This assignment was entitled looking through, this title can be interpreted in many different ways. In my images I decided to focus on looking through stereotypes, this involved the portrayal of individuals in unexpected situations; unexpected either due to their age, sex, expected sexual orientation or the clothes that they were wearing.
Zoe Papiz
I have interpreted the brief of ‘looking through’ as a photo diary and ‘a day in the life’ type project where I will focus on my own life, taking self portraits and documenting things that interest me as well as documenting the events and things I do in day to day life.

I developed the idea to look through the lives of people. At first I thought about taking pictures of people doing different jobs but in the end I decided I wanted to do some Street Photography. I have recently become really interested in Documentary Photography which has inspired me to try a similar style myself. I think I will focus mostly on the City of Liverpool as it is the City that I know the most and the closest to my Hometown.
Rebecca Murphy
For this project decided to look at a number of people’s perspectives including my own by looking a different elements of their lives, which isn’t always considered.
Unit 3a (Abandoned Places and Objects) |
"Many photographers have considered abandoned objects and places. In 'The Tears of Things' series of photographs, Keith Arnatt recorded various objects discarded by their owners. Other photographers, such as Henk van Rensbergen, have been inspired by derelict buildings to produce images that attempt to capture a distinctive atmosphere."
Think about this project in a number of ways. Location will be key if you would like to photograph abandoned places. Think about the word 'abandoned' - what ideas does it conjure up in your mind? What objects could you photograph that respond to this theme? How would you show that they have been left or abandoned? Consider monochrome (black and white) and colour work in your research and own responses.

Cae Study - Jade Kiddell 2010 |
I manipulated the colours and tones of the image to give a blue tone to the image, as it had quite a yellow-ish tone from the artificial lighting. I then adjusted curves to achieve slight darker shadows and added a vignette to add to the feeling of enclosure and restriction. I also used radial blur to give a ghostly effect to the image.
I began manipulating this by adjusting curves and using a layer mask to improve the skin. I then adjusted the RGB channels to give a colder tone and add more contrast. I used the dodge and burn tool to make the eyes more piercing. I used studio flash lighting to give me more control and create strong shadows.
This image is based on the broken/intact contrast. However, I also tried to tie in the contrast of blur/focus by using a wide aperture to give the blurred background, with just the teddies’ body in focus. I like how the teddies’ head is recognisable although it is out a focus and I think this works well. I also like the blur of colours in the background and I think this makes a more interesting backdrop than a plain one
