Summer Show 2012

Charlotte Dunbabin - Aber Roof Truss

For this project, I will be aiming to redesign and rebrand the identity currently used by Aber Roof Truss Ltd, a roof truss company based in North Wales. I will focus on their corporate identity, ensuring that it is somewhat in keeping with their current look and feel. I will aim to produce a new logo for the company, designing new business cards and letterheads in accordance with this. I will redesign their website, using the newer features and technology that they are currently not capitalising on to create a much more appealing site. I also plan to design stationary for the company, as well as possibly creating a slogan, something that they currently do not have. I have also set myself an additional task that I may explore; creating a short video advertisement that could be placed on their site, as well as any other online spaces that may help to spread their brand name further.

I will collect research in a number of areas, exploring both artists and designers that use a number of different mediums. I will research corporate design, exploring logos and highlighting the features that I think will work well or that I should avoid. I will research current advertising design, researching the different approaches that companies take. I will also look into the current designs used by building companies and associated businesses, ensuring that my design fits in with these, while also looking unique enough to grab people’s attention. I will aim to modernise their current identity, ensuring that it appeals to the younger renovators and developers, a vital aim for the company. I will collect a range of primary source images from the workplace and sites, ensuring that I have a good example of what they do.

The main media that I will use throughout the project is digital, using vector for a large portion of the design, Photoshop and Lightroom also being vital for editing my images. I will also use traditional media, trying out a combination of digital and traditional media, something that would put forth their experience well within the designs. I will create both as possibilities, making sure to keep in contact with the client and as them about their preferences as I develop it further.

Victoria Taylor - Vespette

In this project I will be aiming to design and create the basis of a new console game which highlights or tackles how female characters have been perceived negatively in existing games and the media through a game with a unique appearance and narrative. My target audience will be teenagers and young adults of both genders, roughly from the ages of 14 to 26. I will be using Game Industry standard software to produce my final pieces which should follow a distinctive style that is consistent between the assets, while also developing the assets in a process recognisable to that of professional Game Artists. I aim to develop and produce a 3D model of a/the main character, cover art to appear on the box as well as the logo/title of the game, and as an optional extension task a series of concept art showing the environment of the game. The Gaming industry is quickly developing and growing, making it essential to have a new concept that will make the game unlike other competing console games. The final assets should show a thoroughly researched concept and be executed to a high standard, demonstrating a strong representation of a possible game.

I will research the existing game market to find unexplored narrative areas in which I will then aim to generate ideas demonstrating ways that I could occupy that gap while incorporating a positively portrayed female character. I must begin with investigating the Game industry in general to identify the processes, software and methods that they use so that I can then apply them to my own development process. Secondary sourced research will include looking at Artists with experience of or currently working in the Game Industry, enabling me to draw inspiration from their work and incorporate elements which I admire into my own designs. While in London I will be gathering primary sourced photographs to incorporate and inspire elements of my character development, capturing unfamiliar and interesting environments.

Ellis Dagnell - Vanquish

Vanquish is a growing independent movement that you can become a part of, which is aimed at awakening people to the sinister propaganda of groups such as the Government , but also not to be too heavy and political by balancing a fun lifestyle.
It was founded by myself. I was influenced by street culture and the lifestyle in which I grew up.  I set out as a dream for my brand to be established by working and living the brand and not sitting in a 9 – 5 job working for someone else.  As a driven young man I saw myself as a young apprentice and set out to be my own boss.  Like other brands I wanted the brand not just to be producing clothes but to be involved with the urban lifestyle by working with rappers and their videos, networking with a wide range of the culture, and having fun in doing so.
As the brand progressed I became more aware of just how sinister the propaganda was and realised I did not want to follow a false belief that we are brainwashed to believe.  This led to the quote behind the brand ‘Control or Be Controlled.’
The clothing is a statement which is driven not by money or mainstream but to stay true to the concept and ideals of the movement.
Throughout evolving the brand I thought I would use my creative skills to design illustrations for T shirts. This would start a growing movement in an artistic form, by networking with people who have the same beliefs and are driven to create a movement.
The distinctive logo of the brand was formed through the game of chess, with the message that you are your own chess piece in this corrupt world and to use your own strategy and your own intelligence to manoeuvre and to vanquish the opponent which is the propaganda circulated by these groups.
This unique brand is making a statement to get everyone involved through their style of fashion to be different and to make a difference, regardless of their political views.
‘Control or Be Controlled’

Louis Collins - Vex Entity

For my FMP I will market a new apocalyptic survival game (I will be designing the concept for this game). I will be designing an advertising campaign for the game and marketing it. Within the campaign I will work towards producing the imagery for the game, this imagery will not represent the games in-game design/graphics but the game’s presence and theme through a realistic design (photography, illustration and film). To make this game more original than other post apocalyptic games I will design it so it relates to the present day but with the idea that the structure of every day life has broken down completely. During the start of the project I will also look to develop other concepts that may be stronger.

My outcomes for the campaign will be a poster, studio logo, typography, social media advertising, and website design. If time allows I will also design and produce a trailer.

I will research other games and investigate how they have been promoted and marketed. I will research a number of games and films and explore how artists’ movements have inspired their designs. I will also try to find an artistic style of my own to incorporate into my design. I will look at inspirational games such as Bioshock with its art deco style, Fallout and its 50s themed post nuclear world or Assassins Creed which actually links itself directly to artists such as De Vinci with its famous architecture and paintings.

I will use a range of media, processes and techniques. I will focus mainly on photography and manipulating these photographs so that they will have an impact. I will experiment using artist influences to guide me.

Jonathan Bate - Fusion Cafe

The idea that I am going to go ahead with for the final major project (FMP) is creating a brand identity or design for a new cafe. The idea behind this cafe, or the USP of the cafe will consist of me taking this idea of selling products from the north and selling them in the south, and taking products from the south and selling them in the north. This will be the USP and what will be the real driving force behind this project. There are a lot of things that I can do with this idea, or concept if you like and I will be looking to explore and create as much as possible in order to for fill the idea that I have. So the working title or theme behind this FMP will be “creating a brand identity using elements from the north and south”. This sounds about right, as this is what I will be trying to replicate, I may reword it, but you should have a good idea of what I want to achieve throughout this project.

I will look to complete a certain number of tasks over the course of the project in order to properly advertise the cafe, or brand that I will be creating. I will be creating a logo, obviously every business needs a corporate identity, maybe even a character that will be associated with everything that I produce, I will be creating business cards, menus, possibly a website, maybe a digital mock-up of the outside or inside of the shop, posters and maybe one or two more things that may be included as I work through the project.

In terms of conducting research for this project, I will look to tap into my knowledge of the current café scene, as I need to generate a good idea of how I should go about advertising my own company, I will also have to see if there are any trends, or anything that I may need to include in my own plans in order to be successful. I will be looking for artists from websites such as “Illustration mundo, Illustration web and notcot”, from these sources I should be able to find a style that I would like to use and take forward for my designs for this project. Currently I am thinking of doing something modern, nice clean colours, maybe a couple of stylised pieces

Rafal Bryks - Delusion

The theme that I decided to take forward in this brief is video games. The reason being for this is because I wanted to try doing something new to me and it is actually something that will help me in the future, as I have applied for the course based around this topic in the university. This will not only give me a chance to work on my specialization that I chose to go with, but it will also give me a chance to prepare for the higher education. It is something that will keep me interested throughout the whole project, making sure I am doing something that I will enjoy. This theme will give me opportunity to work on a whole range of different Medias. From computer based work to traditional media, making sure that all the time I have in this assignment will be fully used.

Even though I have chosen to go with a theme of video games, I don't think I will be able to produce a whole- fully working product at the end. I am looking to create something more of a single level or graphics for a video game. This is simply because normally, in project like this, there is a lot more people involved (most often the number goes into hundreds). I am currently thinking of create a little map that will be quite detailed and so that the player can just walk around and explore the area. I think it would be best just to focus on the graphics and not on the quests, and cinematics which are found in today’s games industry.  It would be nice to come up with full game with story and different objectives at the end, but that perhaps it’s something I

could possibly do after I finish the project- just for myself to finish it off. Video game is a really hard product to produce, especially when only one person is working on it. A way to walk around it is to create simple 2D game, where I would have more chance in creating fully finished product. Although I don’t want to go that way as using 3D software is the part I am most excited about in this brief, and it is a part that will help me when I go into higher education.

I will be looking at different artists and game developers to get my influences from. I will need to research what can be done in 3D programs and get inspirations from other people- this is my starting point. 3D software’s can be a powerful tool where you can create anything that sits in your head- all from weird creatures, to fantastic landscapes. I will need to consider what I am able to do myself, as well as I will need to come up with something that isn’t out there at the moment.

To start me off I will have to do some research. Find out what programs I will be using, and start thinking about concepts. That will probably take me up to one week, and I could carry on with this in the week two. In the second week I will definitely have to get the final idea of what my concepts are and I will have to start getting primary sources. When I have my ideas and concepts I will have to start making some concept art for my game. This and photos will greatly help me when modeling in 3D. From there to right until the end of the project I just want to get on with making the 3D models. Sounds simple, but because I am aiming to create 3D environment I think that all I need to start me off is to know the setting I will be making my location. Throughout the whole project I will have to keep learning how to use the software. Research and learning new skills in 3D software, Photoshop and game engine is an ongoing task that will need to be continued throughout the whole time I have on this brief.

Benjamin Jewitt - Lomography

For my final major project I am looking at promoting the art movement of Lomography which is a type of photography using analogue film camera with different lenses and effect which they give with vignettes and soft focus. This is a really interesting and fun way of taking pictures and i have taken a big interest in it. In this project I plan to create final promotional material such as posters, T-shirts and other merchandise. I will be looking at the different cameras that are available and which different effects and images they give you. For ideas and inspiration I will be visiting various galleries in London on the 29thFeb - 2nd March this trip will help me to get primary sources.

There are many different photographers that I have found which are taking similar photos to what I am planning to get. Looking at various photos on Flickr, and looking at the actual Lomography too, with people using the different cameras and lenses to get the different effects I will continue to research more artists to gain inspiration.

I will be using illustration and mixing this with photography using different techniques such as inks and bleach to over lay on my photos.

Tom Doherty - Craft Architects

For this project I want to involve my future interests and try to develop an area which relates to architectural structures, development and design. I will be exploring the world of architecture, looking at all aspects, including the materials and the designers had when creating these structures.
I will work towards creating some of my own designs that will involve some of my favourite buildings, styles and designs.

My starting point will mainly be London, as it has hundreds of buildings, each portraying a different style and theme within the area. My influences will be taken from the images I will gather through my trip, also looking at artists within the galleries we visit. I have looked into researching some architectures, I have done this to produce a range of styles, colours and shapes.

Within the development of this project I will hopefully be using a range of different techniques, using the adobe suite, photography, and experiment with modelling/sculpting, which I think will add to the practical side, also relating to the process within an architectural development. Using a range of techniques is a really useful way of developing on my ideas, this will allow me to look at my final outcome in different ways, I could have pencil drawings of the same thing, while having a sculpted version of the design or image. This will allow me to have a different type of style to work on for my development.

Jamie Heaton - Promoting NFL

For my final major project I am going to be working towards promoting American Football in England. I am very passionate about the sport and I want to show people who don’t give it a chance to have a different view on it. Trying to convince an English audience to change their view on the sport will be very hard due to it being a foreign sport and they already have an opinion about American Football. I am mainly targeting people who have already given the sport a bad review and will not listen to other people’s views. I will be making a poster for this assignment and maybe some leaflet’s that could hold information about the sport but the main focus is trying to make a successful poster for the sport.

The artist’s that I am currently looking at are Sam Bevington, while looking at his portfolio online I found his work was quite interesting. I was thinking about using some of his techniques that are used in his work due to the impact it could create. He has used newspaper to create an interesting background. I will be looking at many artists throughout the assignment and building up the research so I can gather some good influences that I could take towards my final outcome. My earliest ideas will be taken from the most important aspects of the game. One area I find that people take a sudden opinion on is the players wearing the padding but they wear it for a reason. I could try and show why this is in my designs. I will be doing research into what area I am going to show so I can make a design that can help me explain an area. I will be taking images of a game when they come to England for one game a season and I could use these within my designs.

Lucy Bretnall - City Visit

The theme of my FMP will be cities such as Liverpool, Manchester and London.  I will be working towards producing a scrap book-like book which will tell the audience of my experiences visiting these cities, especially London.
My outcomes will include a book called ‘Lucy’s Guide to Cities/ London’.  As well as this book I will produce a final cityscape drawn and I intend on using computer software to bring my photos and drawings together.

I visited London and while I was in the city I visited the David Shrigley exhibition and was inspired by his work.  I also took many photos around the city of people, places and buildings.  I also intend to use Liverpool and Manchester as my inspiration. I will gather my primary sources from all three cities.
Influences will include objects such as road signs, vehicles, buildings & people.

I intend to use different techniques such as drawing with pencil and fine-liner and will use both Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop to manipulate my work.

Lisa Sau - Movie Posters

On the final major project I will be developing a redesign on a selection of Tartan Asia Extreme DVD film covers to celebrate the release of the third collaboration film titled ‘Three More Extremes’ (三更3). Tartan Asia Extreme is part of the US and UK film distribution company Palisades Tartan. Tartan Asia Extreme is a label under Palisades Tartan that releases East Asian films focusing on horror and thriller genres, hence the word ‘extreme’ in the brand label. The redesign will include a new Tartan Asia Extreme logo and a range of posters and billboards to display and advertise the new DVD film designs. The goal will be to gain more awareness around the UK and US in East Asian extreme films. As a extension task, a film poster for the third collaboration film ‘Three More Extremes’ can be researched, explored, developed and produced if time is available.

The beginning of this process will involve an outline of the time plan I will follow (which may be revised in future weeks) before moving onto intensive research in a number of artists, illustrators and photographers. A list of planned places to visit during the trip to London will also be looked into so that the trip is used to highest fulfilment. A range of primary sources will be taken during the trip to London as well as a list of artists and their work that I have been of interest and could be looked into further for this project. My research will focus on appropriate artists, illustrators and photographers; whether it is filmography, links with East Asian culture or art I find somewhat intriguing to set me off and inspire me in any way.

After the contextual research is done I will look back to artists’ techniques and try and incorporate their techniques into my work. I will be experimenting into a much wider range of materials, fabrics, art tools and using them to explore and create different types of outcomes to see how it works and whether to explore and create more work with similar methods. Traditional media and methods will be explored a lot, scanned in and opened on Adobe software to create final imagery.

Jasmine Smythe - Eco-City Boardgame

For this brief I will be promoting environmental practices such as recycling and reducing carbon footprints. I will promote this through a board game.  The game would be sold in shops that sell toys and games but also at a discounted price to schools.

Target audience
The game will be designed to be suitable to anyone over the age of eight however it will be more aimed at an audience of 8-13 year olds.

Outcomes required

Corporate Identity - a logo, colour scheme etc, which will be applied to business cards, letterheads, packaging and any other related stationery.

Gameboard - a board game which promotes recycling and other eco-friendly practices to children.
The game will need to include leaflets to explain the rules, as well as game pieces and a dice.

Packaging - a box to contain and inform about the game.

Advertising - a poster advertisement which will be displayed outside toyshops and at family friendly events.
It could also be advertised to an older audience such as parents and schools through social media websites.

Influences - for this project I plan on researching into existing board games, as well as looking at artists who could provide influence for my work.  I will also need to collect information on the environment and recycling to base the game on.
