Summer Show 2013

Daniel Gee - Transfixed Clothing

The working title for my Final major project is ‘Design for Transfixed Clothing.’ I intend to spend the ten weeks designing all the necessary elements in order to set up a clothing/street wear brand. The name I am currently working with is ‘Transfixed’ but this may change over time. The clothing line will be based around urban cycling and the subcultures that surround this. I will start by creating the branding and the corporate identity for the company. Designing the logo, stationery and possibly a website design. I will also work towards producing designs for the clothes themselves, starting with the graphics for t-shirt designs and possibly moving on to creating patterns for button shirts, bags and various other pieces of clothing and accessories. I will also work towards creating a print advertisement for the company that will be versatile enough to be used on screen if needed.

To create effective designs for a clothing brand and set up a suitable corporate identity I will have to spend time researching other clothing brands. These brands will have to be in the same sort of area of fashion

as I envisage transfixed to fit. Brands like Norse, Carhartt, Reigning Champ, Wood Wood and The Quiet Life amongst others will be where I base my initial research. I will also spend time looking at corporate identities that appeal to me and I can take inspiration from. Researching web designs and web designers along with advertising campaigns and the companies that produce them will be another essential area of research.

To create a well rounded identity and small initial collection for this clothing brand a wide variety of techniques and media will be required. The use of computer generated graphics in Illustrator and other programmes within the Adobe Suite. I may experiment with web building programmes which do not require a large amount of coding knowledge such as Adobe Muse. I intend to start working with techniques such as screen printing to create some samples of the t-shirt designs. I will also look at using photography for the print advertisement and if there is enough time the use of videography and video editing software such as final cut pro is another area I would like to try. The timescales I intent to work to are shown below but these may change as I come across problems or work quicker than I expect.

Lauren Watson - Scissor Sisters Rebrand

The name of my assignment will be called ‘Advertising Scissor Sisters Hair and Beauty Salon’. ‘Scissor Sisters’ is a newly established business that was set up by Kelly Pickles and Samantha Taylor who previously worked together. They have really flourished due to their loyalty of previous clients and newcomers.

They have asked me to re-brand their business and possibly produce some advertising to bring in new customers. Their main priorities of the re-brand are to create an interesting and memorable piece of imagery that they as partners can relate to as well as their services and atmosphere. Other than that I have the free rein to create and design what I think is best with regular feedback. I aim to produce a Logo (which can be used throughout) and advertising to promote them. To advertise them as a business I aim to create a main poster and piece of imagery which I can then apply to business  cards and any extras I may possibly do. Also as they have been recognised as a business by Warrington I would like to create a magazine spread.

To start the project off I will start to research the Fashion and beauty industry as well as researching existing Hairdressers. This may be by looking into fashion shows and the different styles of modelling. I would like to also look at illustrations and design that relate to this industry for influences and inspiration. I will be investigating each aspect of what I research from typography to the colour scheme to ensure I have as much knowledge about the theme as possible. I intend to experiment with using techniques, media and processes as inspiration. I may also use photography in my work or at least experiment with it to capture imagery to use with a different media.

To ensure I am analysing my work throughout I will have the opportunities to visit the client and exchange my ideas/development for their view on it and how it can be improved. I will also be self reviewing my work as well as my peers and tutors in class. This will allow me to stay on track with the client and what they want.

Callum Bradshaw - Lovecraftian

My final project will revolve around sculpting, painting and drawing. More specifically I will be doing all of this for a Graphic novel based upon the works of H.p Lovecraft and his fellow writers who created the Cthulhu mythos, this will involve making a sculpt of a bust or statuette as a collectors item. I will also make a few comic book pages containing art work and typography. This however will not be the start of the project.

First I must research in to the time period in which the books where set, mostly in the 1920's toward the end of the 1930's as a result of this I will be doing most of my research in to creating player avatars in museums finding what I can of the culture of America and the United Kingdom during the 1920's-1930's such as clothing, hairstyles, appearance of the people and also for the rule book I will be looking in to the state of the technology and sciences of the time revolving around Archeology and Paleontology as these where the key sciences used within the series of books that Lovecraft produced.

For the bust I will be looking at natural forms and animals mostly of the aquatic sort due to Lovecraft wanting to generate a primordial feel to his creatures so I will be making a few trips to zoos and aquariums to get some firsthand images for inspiration. However I cannot forget to use the books as my go to for inspiration as Lovecraft goes in to great detail about a lot of his beast and creations which could help extremely. The materials I will  use are milliput and green stuff which are forms of modeling putty to create the models, for the rule book I will use indesign and a variety of other materials to create the final piece.

Sam Foote - Bespoke Lunches

For this assignment I will create a company that offers a lunch that can be custom made by the customer and then delivered to them. I will create a whole brand identity such as; Name, Logo, Slogans, Selling points, Colour schemes, Packaging and Advertising posters. The logo and selling points need to be carefully thought about as the visuals are in some ways more important to selling a product than what is actually being sold. Packaging for the different products will be made and prototypes will be made and testing for visuals.

Research current lunch products from a range of different shops and analyse the branding used. Look at different colour schemes and strategies used to sell lunch food products. Research the psychological facts behind certain types of branding and advertising. Research successful packaging and current healthy food brands and products

Dominic Hinde - DHP (Photography)

I will be designing and creating an identity and online presence for myself as a freelance photographer and film maker, as well as building a larger and stronger portfolio. I will create everything from the logo to the website, I have already decided I will be working under my name (Dominic Hinde).

The photography industry is very competitive as now a days, anyone can buy a camera and call themselves a photographer. Therefore I plan to advertise myself in different ways than other photographers. I will begin by designing the essentials like a business card, letterhead and possibly a stamp. I will also create an online portfolio/website and social media pages whilst coming up with other quirky and inventive ways to promote myself.

I will research other brands in the photography and film industry and look closely at identities designed for freelance photographers. I will look for creative designs rather than corporate designs as I want to create a brand that’s professional, but a little bit quirky and different.

As well as researching examples of graphic design and designers, I will need to research photographers to give me some ideas and inspiration for any photographs I take.

I will make this project heavily photography based, so the main technique I will be using is photography. I will also explore with moving image as I want to be able to offer the option of moving image to clients as well as photography.

I will also be doing a lot of design and promotional/advertising work. I will be using modern software such as the adobe suite and social media to promote myself, but I will also use traditional techniques like print making to crate adverts and fine art prints.

Jamie Carmen - Album Designs

I intend to re-create some of my favourite album cover designs to suit a chosen concept/theme of my choice. To do this, I will create my own design company with logo, slogan etc. so that I may design the album design around a certain house style. I aim to create a collection of covers ranging from 4-10 covers each for whichever artist(s) I decide to re-image. The imagery and art that I create for these album covers may feature on other items such as key rings and mugs with the design company logo (brand) so it may raise awareness towards a target audience suited for each of the artist(s) listeners. These album covers that I create will be brought together into a poster design so that they may be exhibited to promote my design skills so hopefully they’ll be noticed.

The starting points I will take for this Final Major Project will be the artwork of existing albums that perhaps have been influential and/or iconic to the music industry. I may do some research into the designers of these covers to see where they may have found inspiration and perhaps try and follow similar routes to theirs. On top of that, general designers such as Nitsche will be looked into as they themselves have influenced not just design in the music industry but as a whole. Looking at various different Record Labels will give me an incite of how to brand my albums designs. Labels such as: LuckyMe; Unknown to the Unknown; PMR; Southern Lord; Get on Down; L.I.E.S; Clone; Type; Hyperdub and PAN.

On my trip to London, I intend to collect a number of different photographs that would represent some of the rawness of the material that’d be found on the album. Certain themes likes Urban Decay may come into use. Textural backgrounds may be something I’ll pay focus on so photographing different textures will certainly help design development. Photography of the different aspects of city/street life may also be featured in my designs. On top of this, illustration I think will play an important role in my designs, so combining illustration with photography will hopefully provide a visually strong outcome.

James Proctor - Retro Future Lego

My final project will be based around Lego, the popular series of construction toys. I intend to create a unique range of products that are each part of a collective “theme” for which I will design a logo and packaging as well. This project will allow me to use the majority of my available graphic design skillset, as I will need to use sculpting and physical design skills for the models themselves, I will use Illustrator and Photoshop for the boxart, and packaging creation and assembly for the packaging.

My range of final products will include the products themselves (a themed series of 3-5 models, built with Lego bricks), a packaging design for one of these products that portrays the model, the theme logo, and all necessary product details and legal information, a cover and a sample page for the instruction booklets that will be included with the models, and a theme-advertising poster, that displays all of the models, along with the theme logo, the Lego logo and all relevant information pertaining to the product.

The initial idea for this project came from my frequent purchase and use of Lego toys and my subsequent desire to work for them in future. As this project will be designed to be part of Lego’s existing brand, it will be necessary to draw a certain amount of influence from the brand itself, throughout their different themes, Lego maintains some consistencies in packaging (such as layout, and logo placement), because I plan to create a sci-fi based theme, starting points on designs could be obtained by looking at vehicles etc that appear in popular sci-fi, and taking note of qualities the designs may have. When building the models themselves, I can draw influence and building techniques from Lego’s large online fan community, as many of them create and maintain websites dedicated to their hobby, on which they display models figure designs, and other related works.

I intend to make the models themselves out of Lego bricks, due to them being designed to work as Lego products, I cannot incorporate and other materials; I intend to make the logo using Adobe Illustrator, so it can be resized to any size without pixilation and I will make instruction booklet samples using Indesign for the layout, and Illustrator for the instructions themselves.

Claudia Reed - Forms and Geometric Shapes

The theme will be around the idea of woman portraiture and how the forms of a woman portrait form different geometric shapes through their faces, hands and body.  You will be making the final outcome for a apple product game which will be the opening screen of that game and the app logo. The apple products will be the ipod touch, iPod or iphone.  You will also have to design a logo and name for the game which matches well with the overall theme of ‘Forms and Geometric Shapes’. The final outcome will have a large poster of the opening screen and imagery of the screen on an apple product. The chosen target audience will be around teenager girls who really enjoy apple apps for entertainment. The age ranges will be from 15 years to 19 years as this will be the age range which you will most likely to be in contact with. To get a proper view of young teenagers you will need to make a questionnaire which will be asking about their own personal views. The constraints will be the primary imagery as you will need permission to take images of teenagers.

From the upcoming opportunity art and design trip to London where you will be visiting many different galleries with famous artists work in. This will be the main influence where you will find ‘old style’ geometric shapes for the final outcome. The visit will allow you to collect primary imagery relating to your chosen theme. The artists which you will be working from Minjae Lee and Josh Bryan who use geometric shapes and woman portraits in their work.

Ryan Haybyrne - Studio 67

During this assignment I will be working to create a new livery design for my own motorcycle to do this I will be bringing it to college to work on and then using my artist research and primary imagery I will seek to create a new livery design for it which both looks professional and new yet still containing an artistic “designed” look, to ensure this I will sketch out my initial designs for the livery design creating as many as I feel is needed for each of my artist research inspiration and concepts, (Minimalism, Art deco ect ect) for my final poster I will look at existing motorcycle posters and sketch out possible designs for my own final poster using primary images I take while working on the motorcycle to show how the bike has transformed from its original state into a professional looking new motorcycle. I will ensure the motorcycle and fairings are clean before re attachment.

Start to develop my personal corporate Identity name and logo which will work in conjunction with the bike and any accessories e.g. business cards, letter heads, work until complete and gather the materials needed to start the sand and paint the motorcycle. Begin work on the motorcycle using hopefully class and personal time to prepare and paint the bike to a high quality standard, using contacts of  my personal tutor to gather vinyl’s to make the process quicker and easier on myself and less time constraining, once complete I will clean the bike and using imagery taken from the work I will create development pages of the bike and merge all of this with the development pages of my corporate identity and other development work.

Patrick Zahar - Androidea

For my final major project, I will be working with one of the largest Android based website in Central Europe. Android Portal brand focuses on helping their readers with daily problems and also informs them about new phones, gadgets and lots of other stuff. During these 10 weeks, I will be organizing and designing a competition for young developers and graphic designers who will be able to show off their ideas for an Application design. I am planning to include well-known companies such as Sony, Samsung or ASUS to become our main sponsors. I will be creating a full identity and advertising for this competition. Starting off with creating an advertising campaign which will notify the readers that they can join the competition and ending with designing the prizes. I will start by creating the first concepts for the competition which will help me decide on the theme. I will also be creating a logo and website design which will allow contestants to enter the competition.

Before I will start with the designing process, I will spending a significant time researching effective competitions which have attracted attention

of many people. This part of the research will be a key to an effective outcome. To do this, I will be researching creative websites such as Abduzeedo, Computerarts, smashing magazine and also advertising campaigns and competitions of other, significant companies such as Lynx or Adidas. Also, researching creative stationery, logo designs and web designs will become very important in designing process and so I will have to focus closely on this research.

To create the most effective and eye catching advertising campaign and competition, experimenting with variety of techniques and materials will be a very important step. I will be mainly working with digital media where I will be using Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator and Adobe InDesign, I will be also using my coding skills to code my website design. For the traditional media, I am intending to use screen printing technique to print my own t-shirts which I will be using as one of the prizes in the competition. If there is enough time, I will be joining the competition with my own application design. The timescales shown below are my initial plan which might change during the project.

Tzania Walker - Audi

My specialised area is Photography and Graphics combined. I will create an advertisement poster for Audi. I will mainly focus on using digital graphics such as Adobe Illustrator but I will also experiment using traditional media such as Brusho Inks and acrylic paint. I will make sure to get plenty of primary imagery of each model of Audi.

My influences will include photographers such as Steve Hall and artists such as Tim Layzell. I will focus on photographers that take shots of cars at different angles. I will research different ways that Audi have advertised their cars and see what style they have used. This will help me come up with something that can be produced by me in a different way but keeping it elegant to suit the company.

To get my primary imagery I will ask Audi for their permission to go to one of their showrooms to take photographs of the cars. I will focus on the interior and exterior of the cars but each at different angles. I could even try getting pictures of the engines. I will then create a contact page of all the photographs which I have collected to show the different angles and cars. Once printed, I will highlight and make notes on the images to show which ones I will use and why I will use them.

My intended use of media for this project will be mainly photography based media such as Photoshop and Lightroom but also because I have decided to create an advertisement for Audi I will also use computer based graphics technique such as Illustrator. My final piece will also be created using Illustrator as this will keep the vector graphics as a vector image. I will also use drawings to show my ideas and development as thumbnail sketches.

David Cooper - Movie Posters

The working title for my chosen brief will be “movie advertisements” and will follow the theme of advertisement by having me produce abstract posters for newer (or yet to be rereleased) movies these posters will not be literal and will not be for classic movies but will instead be abstract preferably minimal with just small hints as to what the movie are not so abstract that it would be impossible to get but abstract enough that it can be considered a bit of a puzzle. With these I would then also like to make a small video showcasing them not to complicated but enough to be more than just a simple presentation.

My influences will be large expected maybe hyped movies that a lot of people may know of and may be able to recognise from the images I create so artists such as Ellsworth Kelly and Robert Mansgold along with influences from the industry itself. My early ideas include making posters for the films displayed and the recent Oscars or at least for those who won, these can go to print, the video will be either me making the posters in illustrator showing the process or if possible a small animation of one of the main posters.

Lewis Ryder - Story Book

With this brief I plan to be working towards a fully illustrated children’s book with a full story and images to go with it. The book will be aimed at children so the themes and words within the book cannot be anything too complicated for the children otherwise they will be confused and not want to continue reading the book. This book will be a max of 30 pages in length, this decision was made for both the readers and me; this gives me enough to do without being in over my head and also so the people reading the book can keep interested with the topics and characters.

My main influence is Dr. Seuss because his books typically have large illustrations with small chunks of text on the side, and I would like to do something similar with my own book. I also like the works of Spike Milligan; his illustrations are very simple line drawings with colour thrown on to give a rough but good looking effect to the work. An early idea that I was working on was to put in textures to the book like fur or sandpaper to give the book interactivity and make it a little different from the usual books that would be picked up by parents for their children.

The main media I would focus on would be using illustration to create vector images from sketches that I have drawn and scanned in to the pc, I would also like to try drawing the illustrations without using the computer and drawn them with inks and pens, I would like to do this because it would give a nice effect to the whole book if it was all draw in inks and pen.
