Summer Show 2014

Thomas Morrison - Planet X (The Lost Cosmonauts)

The theme for this project is mystery and I decided to focus on space conspiracies, two of them I wish to focus on are, “planet X” and also “the lost cosmonauts”. What I hope to produce this project is concept art for a game concept, looking into aliens, and also a sci-fi style. For my final piece I want to create digital paintings, of creatures, and also environments of the mysterious planet.

For this project I want to create a range of different things, I needed to look at a lot when doing my research. I’ve been influenced a lot by James Cameron’s Avatar, and its concept, also I looked at films that are popular in the sci-fi genre, Star Wars, Prometheus and also Gravity. My starting points were looking into people’s ideas and theories of alien life and conspiracies. For instance the unidentified object near the sun, and looking on how I

can add that to my ideas.  One of my biggest inspirations is the game Journey, its minimalist yet dynamic artwork is something that I wanted to incorporate and show in my designs. Colour is going to be important; Kalen Chock is another artist that I am going to research.

I intend to create digital art for concepts of this planet, and so I will work a lot in Photoshop, to create character paintings too. I then when I feel comfortable with the ideas, put some of my work into Zbrush to create sculpts of the concepts, afterwards I will render the sculpts into Photoshop again to create final designs.  I want to look at a range of things on this planet, looking into the life on it, the technology the weaponry and also the transport. There I can experiment in Photoshop to create a nice concept set.

I am going to analyse and evaluate my work throughout the project, I will present my work to my group to get feedback on what I need to improve, I will also have peers who I will ask to be critical of my work so that I can get the best out of the project.

Connor Laffey - Horror

For my final major project I have decided that my chosen theme should be ’Horror’. During this final major project I will work towards creating several concept sheets for characters that will be refined to a high quality. On these sheets I will have a description of each part of the character design and how it would work within a game concept. I will research a number of appropriate contextual sources to help influence my drawings and ideas. I would like the characters to all be uniquely designed using primary sources as reference.

To inspire me to create themes for the topic I have looked at several different ways horror is represented within media and stories. This has involved myself looking at several ‘creepy pastas’ which are different independent stories told about many different things, but I have been looking at horrors of the unknown specifically, with stories such as “I’m at your bedroom window” being a good example of fear of the unknown. I will research several ideas that make up suspenseful horror and the unknown horror.

For the assignment I plan on creating each of the concept sheets in a digital format in order to get the highest quality results. For my concept art I plan to take both a digital and a traditional approach to the sketches, showing several variants to what it is I want, to a high quality. I may also include the use of texturing within the digital art, having done this in the past and found it to be effective. It allows me to add depth to my work. To create each design I will first start out with initial sketches of the object, environment or character, this will then morph into more detailed drawings with the use of colour, eventually becoming  more detailed versions and then into the final outcomes. Each one will be unique and reflect my original theme.

Megan Jenner - Vikings (Historical Adventure)

With my starting point being historical adventure, I will begin to research into Vikings and their beliefs, way of life and overall culture produce well informed artwork that will relate to their culture and also still be visually interesting. I would like to possibly create character designs that are based upon old Nordic myths and legends, using paintings and artefacts to start my research. From that point I would be able to look further into the life style of Vikings and make my designs more down to earth.

As a starting point I will be looking at old artwork and also looking into old Icelandic manuscripts that have some of the oldest drawings of the Norse Gods. I will begin to look at these drawings and work from them with other influences from sculpture, documentaries and other old illustrations that have been uncovered that are from the 18th century. Currently I have been researching the Norse Gods and Valkyries, their

angelic servants. Other references include the history channels TV series ‘Vikings’ and also ‘The Banner Saga’, a fantasy game set in Viking times.

To produce these designs and concept ideas I would like to use a range of different media and processes. Traditional media could play a big part in my work, through painting and drawing. I would also like to look at staining, mono-printing and embroidery. I can then further these processes by scanning them into the computer to then use digital media to develop them. Through the use of Photoshop and a graphics tablet I can then create final outcomes that could then be printed on a much larger size.

To review my work I will use different methods and also work with the people around me. First I will be self-analytical and look at my own work and analyse it. I will be constantly annotate my own work in my sketchbook and re-directing myself accordingly. At different points throughout my project I will seek the critiques of my tutors and peers who can help me see things I can improve on in my work and move forward in the right direction.

Dominic Knapper - Thief

The theme that I have chosen for my Final Major Project is “Thief”. I want to work towards developing character concept art for one or two characters. Afterwards I will eventually have final designs that focus on my finished character. Later it is imperative that I also design environments that I plan on having my character interact with, as well as creating concept art for the tools and items that my character will possess and use to accomplish their goals. After this development process I want to create a storyboard or short animation sequence that will depict the actions of my character, and also visually communicate the personality of my character. If I have time left over, a couple weeks for example, I want to spend my time animating my characters performing average tasks such as running, creeping, stealing etc.
For the majority of my FMP I’m going to be self-analytical of my work. I’ll evaluate what direction my project is going periodically, and survey my workload quite frequently. But I will also make an effort to receive ideas and influence from my peers and tutors.
I intend to use a range of artistic media in creating my work. I am comfortable with creating work in many different ways such as using traditional methods (pencil, water colour, charcoal etc.) and also using digital methods to realise my ideas. Through these different methods, there are different effects that I am interested in creating such as lighting, darkness, textures etc.

I started by looking at different character archetypes from different animated movies. I am mostly interested in the character of Robin Hood and his morals, so I started reading and listening to ballads that were created about him. I also looked into what is known about society at that time and how they reacted to his presence. From here I studied his character in the Disney animated movie, and investigated his body language and the way he talks to certain characters. My earlier ideas involved creating a character with this sense of justice and I’m still interested in researching and developing this idea.

Jack Kirkham - The Revolt of Maddog

The theme of my project will be Historical Adventure focusing on the Revolt of Madog ap Llywelyn which occurred in 1294 and lasted till 1295, What I hope to produce is the concept of gameplay for the game and for my final piece a detailed recreation of Conwy castle, As it is Historical Adventure I will try to keep it factual but there may be areas such as the village where I will have to exaggerate what structures were there due to their being a lack of evidence.

I wish to create something rather unique to any other game so for this I will look at the history of Conwy castle as well as other media such as books and Television shows and films analysing the look of the props and sets, I will need to find out what architectural style existed in England and or Wales around the 1300s, as well as the history of King Edward The I, I will watch Guided Tours and Documentaries as well as visit museums to get a good source of information.

I tend to use a variety of techniques for my project ranging from experimentation in 3DS Max and zBrush as well as Photoshop, The processes that I plan on using to create my textures as well as 3D Models involves creating basic block model in 3DS Max and then exporting it into zBrush. From there I will sculpt the model and create fine details which will then be baked out onto my 3DS Max Model giving the illusion of a high polygon model, I plan to come up with a variety of concepts for buildings through sketches and then creating a concept piece of the Environment in Photoshop using Digital brushes on a tablet.

Throughout the development of my Project I plan to gather feedback, not only from my peers in the class but I plan to start a thread on the Polycount forum and get critiques from professionals, students and hobbyists alike, I will evaluate and document what critiques I have received and how I have developed upon them, I believe this will guide me towards a more high quality final piece, Throughout my development process I plan to record the editing of my work using a screen recorder and speed it up creating a time lapse.

Bethany Norwood - Origin Music Magazine

The theme of my project is going to be Anthropomorphism – This is the portrayal of human identity through inanimate objects. For example animals, objects or plants. I will work towards producing a range of concept art sheets along with a little book that has a background design and explains the work which I have produced. I will also mount my work perhaps in frames as my final pieces. I have chosen my specialist area as Illustration and concept art. This is because I know I will do well and I can produce my work using a range of different media, for example using graphics tablets, watercolour and acrylic paint. With my work I will put the different things I have done into my booklet to show how I got to where I am at the end pieces.

My starting points will be three different pages of research for my chosen starting ideas. I will produce a mood board, a mind map and a page on newspaper articles. I will then start to research artists and short stories. I know that I definitely want to research Lauren child ause I like her work that she does with continuous lines and textures. For my short stories I will look at Aesop’s short stories and I will find a story to base my game off on there. I will have to change it a little bit to change it and mould it around my own concept of the game. I will then create artwork that reflects the artists for my project.

In the background of this project, I will be creating a sketchbook full of things that I would like to use in my work. I will be scanning certain things in that I think will work. I have produced a time plan for the whole of this project. It is a chart where I can fill in half of the box which is where I want to complete the work by and the other half of when I did complete the work that I had set for myself. I will stick this to the back of each folder that I have for my project so I will see it each time I use my folder. I will use a range of different resources for my work in this project that I will display at my show at the end of the academic year.

To evaluate my work, I will hopefully be meeting with other people in college and have peer reviews. I will also be showing my tutors throughout the project to see where I can improve my work and where I have gone wrong. I will also take a look at my time plan and see what I have done each week on time and see what I need to catch up on. Also when we have to present our presentations I will take all of the advice that I have been given and work on what I have done based on what I have been told.

Luke Willock - No Man's Land

I have decided to name my game “No Man’s Land”. I am looking at the idea of mixing two of the genres that we were given and this was horror and historical. For horror I thought towards using human form and for the historical I decided to go for World War One. For this project I am working towards creating a 3D model of a creature or human form.

I will look at a variety of different artist to find what I really liked; I will start to look at films and games as influence. The two artists that I have been looking at is H.R.Giger which is a massive influence in the Alien movies I like his development of creatures. The other being Hans Bellmer, his art work was influenced by the neglect of his farther and sexual positions, which he then transforms into his own creations.

In this project I want to focus mainly on the idea of 3D modelling, so I will personally be focusing more on using 3DS Max for texturing I will be using Z brush to add texture and detail to my. I will also be using the program of Photoshop to develop textures. I will be using photography to help take my idea further and be able to create something that I want to the best of my ability, and from these I will start to develop ideas.

I will evaluate my work to and take my work to my peers and my tutors. I would like to present my work to other people of different ages and see how each of them reacts to the work that I have created.

Matthew Greenhall - Martial Arts

For my Final Major Project I will work to produce a series of outcomes based around the chosen theme of martial arts. The type of game that I aim to create a set of concepts for will be centred on the fighting/action genre. Within this theme I will chose a form of martial arts to base the games style fighting techniques from and an art style that will relate to the martial arts theme to base the theme of the concept work for the game from.

The chosen martial arts will help set the scene for the game, amongst other aspects, such as character outfits and environements. I aim to produce a set of environmental conceptual art for the setting of the game, and a sole character concept art for a single character within the game.

The ideas for the game and the conceptual pieces for it will be influenced by several different martial arts such as Kendo, Taekwondo, and Wing Chun as well as fictional martial arts such as Baritsu, Echani, and Hokuto Shinken which have been created from different medias such as books, manga, and movies. I have researched into these martial arts as well as appropriate art forms that I feel pair well with them such as Manga, Realism, and Chinese and Japanese painting. The ideas for the game itself is to form a fighting/ action type of game and then to use my chosen theme and research to create specific conceptual artwork for it, including environmental and character.

The techniques I intend to use for this project is a combination of traditional and digital drawing to create the majority of the work through the project, but with more of a focus on the traditional side as it is more suited for the style I am hoping to achieve. The main medias that I will be using to create the work are Adobe Photoshop and InDesign. The processes throughout the project will involve perspective and anatomical drawing, scanning and developing sketches digitally and traditionally, and watercolour and ink painting.

The primary methods of evaluation that I will use to review my Final Major Project are self and peer reviewing. This will involve critically evaluating my own work from the work I create and to analyse the strengths and weakness throughout the project. I expect the peer reviews to go through a similar process of my work and I aim to achieve valuable feedback from this. I will be using these forms of evaluation as they will give me an accurate and realistic assessment of the work I create for this project.

Daniel Timms - Zero Gravity

I will work to produce a unity based video game which will be fully interactive in an immersive environment. Based on the genre I will choose, I could use different themes and elements in the game to create a different outcome opportunity. For a horror/space style game, gravity I could influence and harness the many different dangers and fears that being in an environment with 0% air pressure.

I started by researching 3 different starting points given to me in a list by my tutors: Horror, cyberpunk and space. I will need to research these different points to gather a few different ideas of what I could produce. To do this I will gather images and reference points of the internet and add them to a word document.

The contextual references I will need to gather are images or examples of the chosen styles in video games or films for the references, a few games I have in mind are Mass Effect 3, Resident Evil, Bioshock and Dead Island. Although I have been giving these starting points, my ideas could possibly change throughout the project as my work develops; they could be manipulated and altered accordingly as long as they keep the initial starting points

I will use digital and traditional sketching and rendering techniques using software such as Photoshop and InDesign, or hardware such as charcoal I

pencils, sketching pencils, and different types of colouring techniques. will also use 3d modelling software like 3DS Max to create all the different objects needed for my game. Once the models are complete, I will export them to Photoshop so I can add the textures and filters. I will use the Unity game engine to create my game, I will mainly use Javascript documents to create the gameplay and interface, but I will also try to use C# in some different scripts as an attempt to learn a new coding language.

To start the project, I will need to come up with a range of different ideas using notes and sketches, I will create around 3 or 4 A3 pages of sketches before choosing a small number of them to manipulate further. I will hope to combine a few of my ideas and concepts before deciding on the final idea and outcome desired. Once I have finished the initial design stage, I will plan out how I will develop my idea over the upcoming weeks, this will include how long my models and textures will take to create, and how long it takes me to put my unity level together, if I even decide to create a level, I could just create the interface.

I will be evaluated by myself, tutors and peers, upon completing each section. The work will be evaluated based on the quality of work and text linking into the units I have chosen to do. After completing each piece of work, I will self-evaluate it to be sure that what I have created is suitable and relevant to my project. I will link in my work to the ideas and video games I have researched to be a part of my development work.

Stephen Wilcock - Witch Doctor

For this project I am looking at haitian voodoo culture and the people who practice it. Specifically I am looking at the priests of this religion who are known as witch doctors. The witch doctors are the heads of the voodoo tribes in different parts of the world and work with potions and magic to appease their gods. I am looking to research into witch doctors and learn as much about them as possible and then design a character. The character will have the stereotypical witch doctor uniform with the large mask and the staff but with my research I will learn the different items they use so I can incorporate them into the design of the character. I will also think of and develop a game concept around the character to give it some context. My final outcome is going to be a fully textured 3D model of the witch doctor character and a few models of items that the witch doctor would use in the theoretical game.

My early ideas for the project was to do something related to druids and their culture but through further research I started looking at voodoo tribes from Africa and Haiti which caught my interest much more. I learnt a lot from the book “Serpent Rainbow” which goes into detail on the culture of Haitian voodoo tribes which gave me an insight into their society and the rituals they undertake.

With the creation of my final outcome I intend to use 3D modelling software to realise the character design. In the creation of the character I want to have the aesthetic of the design be quite exaggerated and have features of the character be bigger than others in a cartoony fashion. I want to create the textures for my 3D models in photoshop using the digital painting techniques which will make them look cartoony while still giving them substance, rich with detail.

I will evaluate my work by looking at my pieces as well as the photography and evaluate them compared to my designs as well as my conceptual images and influences at the start of the project. And that I can write my evaluation about a wide range of development and experimentation.
