Summer Show 2014

Paul Meaney - Stamp Spray Paints

My FMP is to create a design to advertise a brand of spray paint cans. I will further look into producing a spray paint can design along with a suitable name and logo. They will also be featured in my final outcome. I will be working towards producing a piece of art using the spray paint cans and then manipulating that further to place onto my final outcome. My starting points for this project will be to look at existing packaging and branding of spray paint cans and accessories. I will further look at other artists, preferably graffiti artists such as Banksy and other famous artists. I will also take influence and inspiration from typographers as well because

that also locks in with the theme of graffiti. I will research into other artists and more specifically their work involving packaging and Graffiti. One of my early ideas is to apply the style of Andreas Pries to the packaging of the spray cans but also art using the spray cans. Another idea is to use stencils to get the image across to the target audience using text and typography and I will research into typographers such as Greg Coulton. The techniques I will be using during this project will be the use of stencils when experimenting with spray paint. I will also be using hand rendered techniques and processes to plan out my outcome and also to experiment with different artist styles. I will evaluate my work by asking a range of different questions to myself about what I think I could improve during this project. I will also ask what my strengths are not only to myself but my peers as well.

Christopher Maher - Kaos Skate

I will be looking to create an advertising campaign for My own Skateboarding Range. I will be looking at producing several different Advertising posters to show a variety of different designs and also one to show the range in general. As an extension to the posters I will be looking at producing a promotional video that will be used alongside the posters as a viral add. The point off this advertising campaign is to boost the popularity of this range I have created as recent ranges such as "Janoskis" Have had greater popularity.

My starting point has been to look at artists and others work. This has gave me a few initial ideas to work with and I will continue to do so throughout the project. My research so far has taken me to Behance where I  have been researching advertising and general artists.  http://www.behance.net/TheMadeShop .The Made Shop will be my main influence, and I will be looking at a previous project they created and taking influence from it.

In This project my work will be split between both hand rendered and computer techniques. For example i will be building something to do with the brand which will then be photographed and taken back into editing software such as photoshop and illustrator.

In this project I will be looking to ask for peers to review my work by creating a questionnaire for them to fill in and give me criticism on my work which I will be able to make changes to my work which will enable me to improve it.

Sophie Cahill - Photographer

For this project, it is very self-set based and I have decided to take it upon myself to re-brand my own Photography company. I have made this decision because Photography is a very strong point of mine and it is a subject I feel I have a lot of confidence in., I am heavily influenced by Photography and my previous pieces have worked out really well so I figured it would make sense to base my project around this specialist area. In terms of individuality, I have already set up myself my own Facebook page under the name ‘Sophie Cahill Photography’ this is definitely a starting point for my work as I already have some promotion with around two-hundred people. I aim to reach higher rates of popularity and to do this I wish to design my own business cards and advertisements such as online adverts and posters/flyers.

For my initial starting points, I will produce my own photoshoots and look at the work of other Photographers. I think by looking at other artists work, it will be very beneficial in the development and idea stages of my work as I can see how other people have gone about producing their images and the composition of their images and flyers/adverts/business cards etc.

Being a dedicated Photographer outside of my class, I have took it upon myself to find out as much as possible about Photography, what it is, why it’s used and how I can achieve the best looking results, I am also in the posession of many different lenses and pieces of camera equipment, this can really help me to achieve good results and the results I am looking for.

Reece Milne - Loan-A-Home

I will Branding a letting agency. The theme of this project will be based on properties and houses as this is what the company works with.

I will be working towards producing a Company Name, Company Logo, Letterheads, Business cards and a Web page. I want to create these outcomes so by the end of the project, they all look like they belong to the same company. For example, I want to stick to strict colour schemes and I could use specific, distinctive shapes that could relate to the company. I will also work towards a final poster which I can present at the final exhibition where I will be showing my work. For these final outcomes, I will be looking at coming up with more abstract concept as oppose to literal as I think I could create more interesting ideas and potential final outcomes.

My influences will be professional logo designs of a range of companies. Graphic designers and agencies that specialise in branding and artists whose work I can look at incorporating into my own. I will also be looking at full re brands to see how other designers have linked the outcomes together to look professional and it looks like a brand.

Firstly I will be looking at clarifying my brief to see the details of what the client needs and wants. Why is Letting a better avenue than buying a property? The weight of a mortgage versus the ability to move homes freely is something I want to explore.

I will be researching examples of competition outcomes to gain inspiration. I will then start collecting imagery and developing my outcomes, probably completing them one by one as I think this would help me to manage my time more effectively and efficiently as I will have a time frame for each outcome. During the development stages, I will constantly be researching artists looking for imagery inspiration and looking for new media and techniques I will be using. I will finish by evaluating my outcome so I know where I will need to improve in the future.

Scott Carroll - Graphic Design

For my final major project I will be looking at starting up my own graphic design business based around London and this will possibly benefit me in the future. I will look at producing a company that is specialised in general graphic design from illustration, to typography to manipulation. Almost like an agency. I will firstly come up with a company name and identity and from that I can stem out and have multiple different supplements made. I will look at creating the logo and branding of the company to standout from other design agencies and have a unique twist as this will be important.

I will start off the project with the name and identity. This will consist of mind mapping company names and possible logo concepts taking either from images I took from London or other supplies of primary resources. Looking at different artist I will have to look at different media’s for example. Artist who specialise in logo design, illustration, branding etc. I want to have a clear concept and a unique logo to help brand my company.

For independent techniques I will be looking to use mixed media, such as drawings, rough sketches, collectable resources (leaflets, flyers etc), things that will help when creating a final outcome. With this being a graphic design business I will be looking at creating all the stationary myself from letters, envelopes, tshirts, rulers, rubbers, note books etc. This will be a huge part of the design process as it is important to get some foundations done.

For the final stages I will need to evaluate my work and this can be done from getting group feedbacks looking at ways to improve certain aspects of the project, what can be changed to help maximise my grades, This can be done in two ways, questionnaire and group chat, Giving me the chance to talk to fellow piers and have constructive criticism, as this is an important element to have in designing.

Connor Williams - Raindance Film Festival

I will work towards producing a poster promoting local film festivals coming up this year and encouraging young people to enter. When creating this, I will be looking at different techniques and processes that I can use to create a wide range of outcomes.

The audience for this project is going to be teenagers / young adults that are going to be interested in films and independent films that are created.

I will also be looking at creating flyers or leaflets that will also promote the festival, encouraging young people to enter. As extensions I might also look at creating T-shirts that also promote the festival.

As a starting point for this project I will look into local film festivals along with other popular film events that are well known around the world. For research I will look into artists on Behance.net that use a variety of different techniques for creating posters so I can take inspiration from a variety of different techniques and processes. I will look at digital techniques such as illustrator and look at how I can use illustrator to create imagery for the posters, using illustrator will allow me to create imagery to that it won’t pixelate when scaling.

Throughout the design process I will be evaluating each piece of work with the internal deadlines for my 4 concept pages and my development pages which I will have to present to the class throughout the 10 week project. I will be reviewing my work in more critical ways such as self-assessment and peer assessment whilst developing my final outcomes. I will also complete a written assessment evaluating my development process along with my final outcome.

Shaun Goodwin - Origin Music Magazine

For my final major project I plan to create a magazine. Magazines are something that I have experience in making and something that I enjoy producing. I want to create a new magazine from scratch, developing a recognisable logo and hopefully make the FMP a lot more enjoyable for me to work on and improve the standard of my outcomes.

Because I have studied Media Studies through to A2 level, Magazines are something that I have a very clear understanding of the codes and conventions, it also means that I have acquired skills that enable me to produce magazines to a professional industry standard and they will be suitable for the standard that my final major project needs to be at. Throughout this FMP I will be using various different production

techniques such as photography and digital manipulation through InDesign to create my magazine layout. The subject of my magazine will be new up and coming bands breaking in to the indie rock scene, however as well as covering the bands I will also cover all aspects of indie rock such as clothing, festivals, gigs etc. Because my magazine will be brand new it will need advertising so that people are aware of its existence, to do this I will produce billboards and posters based on concept pages that I will produce myself, the concepts will be based on literal and abstract subjects within my magazine so that it advertises my product well. The USP of my magazine will be that it will also be compatable on many other platforms other than the traditional paper, I plan to create a magazine that works brilliantly with iPads and tablets, it will contain pull out features and external links to products and info that is featured within the magazine.

Thomas Kenwright - Rare Racing

I will be producing the Branding identity for a Motocross Clothing Line that I will create and stylish designs for the clothing. Also I will produce the website design, mobile application, Magazine Cover and the Designs that will be placed onto the clothing. The style of clothing changes depending on the concept.

I will start by researching into motocross clothing brands so then I can capture the style which they use. By researching different sports brands, I can see how their websites and applications fit together with the style of clothes they produce. Also I will look at different artists that work for these companies so I can see the sort of work they produce. The key focus will be on full campaigns and how they brand them to become instantly recognisable.

I want to concentrate on the competitive side of the sport and develop an identity for each rider. This individual response will then be used to brand the riders and stretch out across the merchandise and final poster. I will research and mindmap different ideas to develop a suitable outcome.

I am intending to use illustrator for most of the website and digital pieces of work so that the images I create are vector, I will use primary photography for taking photos of the T shirts and screen printing materials for the designs that will go on the T shirts.

I will review my work throughout the project by asking students around the college what they think of my work and whether it needs any improvements, also if I see that I could do better in some areas I will make sure I put that into my work so people can see how I have made improvements and noticed that something needs to be changed.

James Carnell - Leeds Royal Armouries

The theme for my FMP is to promote the Royal Armouries in Leeds. In order to do this, I will be superimposing photos that I have taken from different locations from Liverpool, Leeds and Manchester to create a Poster/Advertisement showing different soldiers and weapons throughout time, as the Poster will have a timeline at the bottom explaining the different centuries. The target audience will be for people who are interested in the Royal Armouries.

I feel that the idea of the Poster with a soldier taken out of time and setting ,will work well as it shows the essance of what the Museum has to offer. My influences for the Poster designs will be the advertising campaign for EA’s Battlefield 3, the Crytek as well as various Retro-future artists, as I feel that the colours and composition work very well and catches your attention. I will also be looking at photo manipulation, which is very important in my design stages. I will also look at Artists from EA and Crytek.

I will be researching different artists that I will be using for inspiration. I will also write out several mind maps displaying my ideas clearly, showing my thought process. I will then concisely write my ideas into a list from which I will then choose my idea for my Final Outcome. I will do this by drawing up different concepts. I will also gather primary images and use them in my concepts. I will carry on with artist research to gather more ideas and other possible links to my work., I will be ensuring that my Final Outcome is to the highest standard that I can. I will do this by once again referring back to my ideas and seeing if I have successfully created the idea that I had for my final outcome.

In order to evaluate my work, I will ask peers to review my outcome and ask for their opinion, as well as reviewing it myself. I will also ask my tutors for their opinion and how I could change my outcome in any way.

Daniel Banks - WZA BMX Community

For my project I am going to be branding a small community within the local BMX crew. I would like to produce some promotional products to get them known. The promotional products would consist of a few T-shirt designs, small length DVD and some sticker designs. I would like to produce these promotional products so they can expand their audience and create a form of income for themselves.

To start off with I will research into other BMX crews out there. I will do this to get familiar with what is already established and how other crews having gone about it. I will also research into a few illustrators and designers so I can gain some ideas and inspiration. I will also browse online artist’s blogs to find the artists that will influence my work. I will be producing my own interpretations of the artist’s work.

I intend to use a wide range of different techniques to produce my final outcome. For example I would love to explore with screen printing to produce the T-shirts. This would be alongside all the hand rendered sketches I produce for the designs.

I will produce the graphics that will be going into the small length DVD and T-shirt designs. I will start filming for the small length DVD straight away to gain as much useful footage as possible throughout the FMP timescale.

Once all completed I will ask myself: Have the ambitions I had been achieved or not? I will also look at the timings of the project and see how well I have stuck to them. I will also be evaluating the quality of my work. Did it turn out how I imagined it would?

As well as my own evaluation I will get evaluations of my work from my peers. I will aim to get this feedback throughout the project as my work progresses.

Luke Massey - Support Charity

For this project, I have complete free rein over what subject I choose to present in an interesting and innovative way. The buildings in question will be interesting from a graphic design point of view, sporting different angles and shapes to make it geometrically interesting. I am then going to incorporate bits and pieces of TATE and Liverpool’s national gallery inspired graphics to accompany my buildings and possible slogan.  The processes involved include photo manipulation and including re productions of gallery inspired art, adding my own unique twist to showcase the museum or gallery as a modern, fresh place to visit. The

u.s.p of this idea will be advertising these local attractions in new and exciting visual formats, aiming for a younger audience in general, though this doesn’t mean that a variation of this idea for an older generation is out of the question. By bringing the objects within these locations to life, I am hoping to capture the attention of my target audience by presenting these objects in visually exciting ways. I will also be brainstorming a multitude of idea’s that relate to my concepts. These will include literal idea’s as well as abstract, exploring the vast possibilities of producing a design that conveys a message to the target audience and is a visually exciting graphic that also meets a professional standard.

Rebecca Walton - Beckle Customs

The theme for my final major project will be to create and develop a clothing brand featuring my own artwork. I aim to produce a variety of clothing and accessorises using a variety of techniques and media, what’s important to me is that the products I produce are eco-friendly.  I aim to photograph the products being modelled by myself and friends as the target market for my wares would be around 16-25.

There are many influences to my artwork predominantly traditional tattoo art as well as animals especially from north America such as bears, deer, foxes and wolves, the animals are all what I deem to be quite beautiful or interesting to look at and to stylise and illustrate. Another influence of mine, is independent clothing brands, one thing I enjoy about this concept is that it is different, you don’t see these shirts in every shop on the high street, the artist gains recognition for their work and a lot more care would have been put into the design. I intend to look at certain tattoo artists and illustrators who suit my style of artwork as well as visiting the museum and possibly the zoo to acquire my contextual references as well of course, the internet.

I aim to photograph models in order to develop the A0 display board, once the graphics for the board are complete; I want to have the plugs finished as well as any other jewellery I could possibly create.

I hope that my work will come together well as a collection and that the artwork is created to a high quality, I will evaluate my work by looking at my pieces as well as the photography and evaluate them compared to my designs as well as my conceptual images and influences at the start of the project. And that I can write my evaluation about a wide range of development and experimentation.

Connor Anderson -Albithell Graphic Novel

For my FMP I intend to create my own range of graphic novels based on a completely new theme and location.

I will thoroughly research existing brands and influences, researching all aspects of Manga and Dark Horse productions. I want my outcome to feature a realistic, illustrated outcome so I will focus my primary source gathering on traditional human form and costume / armour that I can study.

I will create the title brand for the graphic novel, developing a name and theme. Once this has been finalised I will create the final design using Illustrator.

For the main imagery I will experiment using both traditional drawing, mix media and digital editing. My final advertising poster / cover will be chosen from the range of imagery I create.

I will evaluate the project and look for feedback from my peers within the group to help me choose the most suitable image for my final A0 print.

Daniel Austin -JB Construction

I will be rebranding my uncles construction company producing a logo, business card, letterhead, website and clothing. The Logo will need to be the focal point of the design as this will feature across all the branding.

I will look at different website designers and logo designers so that I will have a good idea of the sort of work that I will be producing. I will research the competition in the construction industry from both large, well established businesses to smaller companies that JB Construction will be competing with.

I will be creating the Logo in Illustrator once I have a design I am happy with. I will create lots of variations for this as it is the element that will hold up the entire brief.

For the main image I will try out various techniques and processes to try and give maximum impact to the final design.

I will ask for feedback from my peers to evaluate the project before finalising my large scale print.
