Summer Show 2015

Jennifer Hall - If it could speak - Look/15

For my final major project, I will be undertaking a live brief creating a promotional campaign for ‘Look/15’, an international photography festival. Look/15 is the North’s premier photographic festival based in Liverpool, which delivers engaging events, exhibitions and mass participation activities. The festival showcases work created by both, local and international artists, and in previous years has attracted over 325,000 people. Throughout the project, I will be working closely with established Look/15 photographer Tony Mallon.

I hope to learn more about the photographic themes explored within this year’s Look/15 festival and use these as starting points. Following on, I will choose four literal/abstract concepts, in which I consider to be my strongest ideas and develop these accordingly. For relevant inspiration, I will gather my own primary sourced images and investigate the work of other influential designers. The predominant final outcome I will be producing for Look/15, is a poster promoting an exhibition within the photography festival, therefore it is of great importance that I not only experiment with imagery and composition, but also with complementary styles of typography. I intend to combine a range of media within my final piece, including both traditional and non-traditional processes. Some of which traditional techniques may include, mono-printing to create texture, observational drawing from photographs, or possibly mixed media collage. However, due to the Look/15 festival focusing on photography, I am keen to experiment and combine traditional processes with digitally manipulated imagery. Moreover, as my final outcome will be used and produced commercially, it is essential I incorporate some form of digital media.

In order to meet the deadlines, I have devised a timeline stating how the weeks of my project shall be organised and divided.

Poppy Willock - Barclays Mural /Self Promo

For my final major project I will work towards creating a mural for the Barclays offices which I was especially commissioned for. This mural will be hand painted onto boards and then transferred to the Knutsford head office which will feature my own design and characters. As well as this, I will be creating a branding for myself through the medium of business cards and an advertisement, that will feature all my own artwork and logos.

I will liase with Barclays to enquire about what they are looking for in the mural in terms of themes, styles, the possible message that they want to get across, what they feel would suit their offices and the size of the wall I will be working on. This will then help me brain storm ideas and to work specifically to what the client is looking for. To start off I will research different mural painters to see what looks appealing, what style works best and what techniques would be best to use. I will also explore different business cards and artists to what compositions work well to best represent myself as an artist and designer.

I intend to use both traditional and digital mediums. For my mural, I will be creating the mock ups and thumbnails of the piece digitally and then when the final piece is decided, draw and paint it onto boards. For my business card and advertisement I will be focusing mainly on digital mediums as I feel that this will give me the best outcome, showing my skills as an illustrator and graphic designer.

For the timescale I will have to give the mural extra time and work on it through the course of about three weeks so I will have enough time to get it finished to a high standard. For the evaluation of my work, I will contact Barclays during the development of my piece to make sure that they are happy with the progress and the design. Along with this, I will also ask my peers and tutors for insight on things I might be able to change and their opinions on my developing work.

Mega Rigby - Ruff's Rescue

For my Final Major Project I plan to brand advertise an animal rescue centre. I want to do this is a creative and unique way, including textures and prints with photography. I think this will create interesting, detailed pieces. My main piece of work will be a poster advertising the rescue centre. This would be shown in bust stops, billboards and in newspapers. Also, I want to create business cards which could be given to the public who are interested in adopting an animal or donating to the charity. To make the charity modern and up to date, I think it would be useful to design a contemporary style website. This also will help people know what animals are available for adoption. Across all the different pieces of advertisement, I will place a new logo, including a name for the rescue centre. I want this to be a new, creative and remember able name and logo.

I plan to start by researching into existing rescue centres. This is so I can see what works well and works as a memorable logo. I will look into artist’s work which is based around animals. I want to experiment with nature and animals environment. An early idea of mine is to look into wood patterns and using paints to bring out the textures of the wood. To get primary photography I plan to go to existing rescue centres, this will help me get information and an insight to the animals. Also, I will be able to get photographs of rescue animals first hand.

Catherine Garcia - CAPA Bubble Tea

My Final Major project is advertising for ‘Tea Leaf Traders&Co.’ which is the company that have asked me to create a brand identity. They wanted to take a more contemporary approach to the branding of their new product which is Bubble Tea. Bubble tea is a speciality drink which originated during the 1980’s in Taiwan. It popularized firstly in America, then steadily garnerd interest in Britain. The types of teas used are green tea, milk tea and red/black tea which is then infused with natural fruit flavourings. It then evolves to milk shake which has the hint/taste of the tea. This will then be served with tapioca pearls.

I will create a logo, colour scheme, brand name and a poster. As an extension I could create a website design, a mural for their wall or an app design for them. They want me to create a modern, contemporary and quite unique branding for them to attract the younger audience. I have chosen to promote that it is international, it is a healthy choice of drink, refreshing and it brings smiles to their consumers.

I will research into different minimalist artists, designers or illustrators which will then relate to the different concepts that I have gathered from my brainstorming. I will research into different bubble tea shops or stores in Manchester to get primary images of the products to see the different types that could be made with the product. I will take secondary images from the internet and research different existing brands and brand identities so that I have quite a good insight on how to create the brand identity for the bubble tea. Different media and processes that I will be utilise Photoshop and Illustrator for the logo work and for assembling the poster. I like incorporating textures and patterns within my work, so I might also use some traditional media to experiment with.

Alexandra Taylor - Alia Esse

Within my Final Major Project, I will be developing and setting up a T-Shirt Company, I will be looking to produce a number of things that would be essential in this kind of company. I will be developing a brand name, brand logo, business card, a website, flyers, posters and if I have enough time, I will be developing example T-Shirts. Although I think that I would need to develop this before I start anything promoting the T-Shirts, so then I would be able to start to photograph people wearing the product goods. I will be aiming to display my work within a different way using this kind of concept. Promoting my kind of work towards the public.

I will be looking at different kinds of influences, I will be looking at T-Shirt Companies, Illustrator artists and artists around based around this kind of work. I will be looking at high known brands, for example Drop Dead, Babycakes and also Band T-Shirts. I have currently got a few starting points that I would like to work around and develop further within the project, these starting points are based what my concept ideas are going to be. Band merchandise, Skater’s Gear, Urban Style, Graphic T-Shirts, Slogans and Saying (Funny T-Shirts) and Technology based T-Shirts. During my research I will be expanding one of this concept ideas.

Claire Berry - Berry Lips

For my FMP I decided to create my own range of lipsticks that would match all skin colours and would also match your mood. The name is Berrykiss. I used my last name just so the brand is more personal to me and also the Kiss I thought would be a clear idea of what the name represents. I have designed 10 lipstick colours but within those I have made 4 shades out of each colour so that there is more of a variety. Another idea I thought of was to have a random colour which could be a limited addition lipstick. In my project proposal I also said that I would be creating a skin chart to show which shade matches which lipstick colour best. I have also designed a lipstick packaging of what it could possibly look like and to make sure the theme carries through I will also make sure that patterns and colours are the same on my final A0 poster and business card.

After 10 designs I thought I could somehow use all of my colour range in the poster without being too much. I decided to use thin strips of each colour and place them evenly next to each other.. I also wanted my imagery on the poster but I placed them on top and they didn’t look right at first until I thought about using a clipping mask on each photograph. This would place the photography underneath the colours but by using the transparency and the edits with it, I changed the opacity of the colours so you can see the photographs underneath clear. This effect really worked because you can’t see the full picture, just the important part which is her face and what she’s doing. As a quirky effect I decided to pull down the blue shade as it is the limited edition colour. For final touches I placed my Berrykiss logo, tagline, slogan and social media logos on to the poster.

Daniel Green - Self Promotion

Self-Branding/ Promotion – I want to produce a number of things to promote myself. I want to create a practical piece of work using different types of hand rendered techniques. This piece of work will spell out my name as I am promoting myself.

My starting point is to research other artists to find inspiration for when making my own practical Typography. My concepts are Freedom, Dedication and Endurance, Music and The 5 Senses. I am drawn to the senses one the most as it has a more scope for an experimental approach and is a more opportunistic concept. I want to create each letter with different techniques to portray the 5 senses and portray that graphic designers don’t just use one sense but that they use them all.

I will be using every technique possible as I want to come out of my comfort zone of making/ creating computer work and apply my skills in hand rendered, photography, 2d and 3d design and textiles/ practical work to include photos of it to place in an A0 sized poster which will be for the exhibition.

First Period - Brainstorming, Ideas and Concepts, Researching and Information Gathering
Second Period - Choose Idea/ Concept I'm going to use, Get photography if needed and start putting together pieces of work.
Final Period - Development, Apply my work to business cards, complete the final composition and submit Evaluation and then present.

I will Evaluate myself on how well I used my time, How competent I think my work is, strengths and weaknesses throughout the whole project and what I could improve on in the future. There will also be feedback from tutors and professional people from within the industry.

Olivia Sutcliffe - OT's Bakery

For my final major project I want to brand a bakery/patisserie that specialises in dairy free product. I want to create a brand identity including the logo and an advertising campaign to promote the business which would include a poster. I am going to look at different themes for my idea such as vintage, rustic, and different time periods. This will help me come up with an identity for the business. I want to look at imagery that will relate to the theme and also be visually interesting.

I am going to explore different styles as this will give me a variety of avenues to look at. As the business specialises in dairy free products I can look at the alternative ingredients that would be used and how they would be organic which is a starting point for a concept. I can also look at the natural products which will give me different ways of approaching the project. I am going to look at different artists who use multiple techniques and styles. I want to look experiment with print making which could include repeated patterns such as Orla Kiely. This would fit in with a 60s theme, however I want to look at different styles that will connect to the audience. I am going to look at a variety of artists that have different ways of working and using different media as this is something I want to try.

I want to look at different techniques for this project including photography and also 3D work. I also want to look at using hand rendered techniques that will work well with the style I choose. I like the idea of using recyclable materials such as already recycled cardboard as it would work well with an organic theme from the diary free products. I think this would work well giving identity to the brand. I want to look at making things in the project to use different media and work in different ways to get the best result in my design.

Joshua Lloyd - North West Trailers

For this project the theme is to assist a company to launch their services with creating a logo, poster and maybe other promotional designs. North West Trailers is a new company that transports goods by using trailers. They are currently without a logo or any promotional material. I am working towards producing Logo, poster and stickers for North West Trailers. This might lead to other promotional material being designed.

My starting point will be starting a brain storm which will help me come up with my concepts and other ideas for advertising materials. I have three ruff ideas for my concepts at this point they are Time, Transportation objects and old west trailers. I will being to researching different companies that offer the same thing to see how they advertise their company and if I can use any of their ideas. I will then look at artist so that I can get influence for the style of my work. I will look at both traditional artists and artists that use vector graphics. I will be able to get my primary sources images quite easily as I work part time with trucks and trailers.

For preparation for my final piece I will experiment with other techniques so that I have a range of different styles. I will sketch out my ideas in pencil and then manipulate them in illustrator but I would like to use a range of different media. I will look at using acrylic paints as I think these will work well for the stickers. For preparation for my final piece I will experiment with other techniques so that I have a range of different styles. In the first week I will do my project proposal. In week 2/3 I will make a brain storm and come up with 4 concepts that are based around North West Trailers. For week 4,5,6,7 I will do my experimentation and artist research and for week 8,9,10 I will do my final development.

I will review my work each week in my development pages and I will do a full written evaluation at the end of the project. Also I will be presenting this in a show in front of professionals.

Mateusz Kwiatkowski - Sinema

In my FMP I will be working on a horror, story video game. I am planning to produce concept arts of characters that will appear in the game, advertisement for it (e.g. Posters, covers), designing background and planning story. In this project my goal will be creating at least one concept art that will be on a professional level. The biggest challenge of it will be digital painting. I will try to practice for as long as I can and increase my digital painting abilities.

There were a lot of influences in creating this idea. The one that is the biggest influence is probably unofficially realised Japanese 2D game called “Ib”, a horror created by Kouri with the RPG Maker 2000 engine. I will try to develop content for my own horror-story game. The title I have chosen for this game is “Sinema”. Main character of this game is a lost girl with amnesia, that entered the cinema to protect herself from powerful storm. Inside she found out eight other people. Overly angry, middle aged priest; Mexican, veteran soldier; married couple, constantly arguing; two high school girls; overweight, nerdy looking high school student and casually looking man. Suddenly they realised that cinema is closed and they can’t leave as some kind of black “thing” is blocking every door and window. They decide to explore the cinema. As they entered a cinema hall some movie started playing.

The interesting part of the game is that it depends on your action if the person will overcome their sins, or will they just die.

I’m intending to make my concept arts by sketches (pencils, pens, fine-liners, markers) and colour them by digital art (Photoshop). Later on when I will have couple of them, I can use them in order to make a poster.

Jake Taylor - Single Source Solutions

In this project here I have discussed with the client about what I should create or design. We have mutually agreed on the focal points of my project.

I shall be creating a poster/leaflet advertising the many routes and specialism of the business, a business card for my client to use and portfolio design, potentially a letterhead too. Each of these must follow a strict colour scheme and should include relevant imagery for the business. Finally I shall consider looking at the business logo, though the client has stressed he is happy with his current logo, as a designer I could work on some improvements to match the rest of the stationary I am going to create.

To start my research in order to create ideas and begin my developmental work, I shall be looking at other character illustrators and layout designers. This will enable me to complete my project and to start developmental work that has direction through the influences of my research. I shall consider various designers and their styles of work and I will experiment with these designs and evaluate them. The effective components of these designs that I create will be taken forwards towards my final piece.

I intend to create my work using the design process. I shall consider looking at various hand rendered techniques and computer techniques through a series of developmental stages that will start from my initial concepts. Weeks one to three will be spent researching and brainstorming ideas to create final concepts in which I shall present to peers and the client to choose my portfolio direction.
