Summer Show 2017

Naomi Clarke - King's Dance Company

My client is the dance teacher, Elisia Jeffs, for KDC. KDC (King's Dance Company) is a dance group that practices on Thursday night, and is part of my Church. I use to dance in it, however now I help volunteer teaching there. The dance group is made of girls that are aged 9 - 15. However, the group is open for both boys and girls, aged 9 - 17.

To start off the project I should create a mind map with a range of different ideas (both abstract and literal), with everything I know about dance and selling points. Then I will choose four different concepts, some abstract and some literal concepts, to show to my client. After that I will take two of my concepts forward. This be whatever two concepts I feel are the strongest. Then I will research different dance companies and see how they have branded and promoted themselves, to get influences, as well as other typography artists.

For this project, I should use a range of media and process (at least 4 different ones, e.g. Photoshop, Illustrator, collage, painting). This means experimenting with both hand rendered techniques and digital techniques.

Over this project, the first three weeks are for; the project proposal, mind-map, concept pages, and research. Then the six weeks after that is for development (about 40 pages). This includes; research, poster development, logo development, primary photos etc. Then the last two weeks is for producing and finalising the outcome.

Allanah Garland - Darcy Formal Wear

For this project I have decided to create my own brand. This will require me to design my own logo and brand name. As I am going into fashion promotion, I thought it would be beneficial to me to choose a project that requires me to promote clothing. Therefore, as well as a logo and brand name, I will be designing and creating my own style of clothing and will do a photoshoot to promote them. To begin I will research into current and past fashion designers, fashion promoters and artists. Beginning the process, I will thoroughly brainstorm ideas of possible routes and concepts I can consider and expand on later on. Once I have chosen 3 or 4 strong concept ideas, I will research and expand the ideas, while considering artists I will have already found and take inspiration from them as my ideas develop. I will also need to research fashion brand logos and names when brainstorming and designing my own logo and brand name.

To create my outcome, I intend on experimenting with digital and hand rendered art work, this will allow me to use a larger range of techniques within

the project and develop more ideas. Three weeks into the project I plan to have 3 or 4 strong concept ideas, having experimented both abstract and literal ideas. I also plan to have researched deeply into my theme and have a great knowledge and confidence of the idea and theme. Then by the following 6 weeks I will have all of my development, having been experimented with alternative techniques and styles inspired by my artist research. I hope to have decided on a name, logo design, clothing style and completed a successful photoshoot or 2. I then will have the final couple of weeks to put everything together and perfect all of my outcomes and present them the most aesthetically pleasing layout, design and outcome.

As I come to the end result of my project, I plan to make critical judgements and accept and consider opinions towards my outcomes and make suitable alternations where needed. I plan to present my work as professionally yet creative as possible to interest my target audience I will decided early on within my project. Throughout this project I will be using the Adobe software including Illustrator, Lightroom, InDesign, and Photoshop when creating each of my final outcomes.

Kaitlyn Trew - Peter Bate Landscapes

I aim to create a re-brand for my uncle's landscape gardening company. This idea has stemmed from when I had seen one of my uncle's company vehicles driving through the area and I noticed that the brand identity for the business had no real impact.

I will begin by making a logo to apply to stationary such as business cards, letterheads, compliment slips etc. This could then be added to t-shirts, jumpers or vehicles that are used by employees in order to represent the company using different medias. I also want to make an advertising campaign for the company using the new branding and imagery to keep to the same theme and hopefully expand the audience in order to create more business.

I will begin by investigating different themes from the idea of landscape gardening through mind maps, concept pages, research and peer discussions. By completing these thoroughly, it will allow me to gather as many ideas as possible to make sure that I am completely exploring this area. Throughout my research, I plan to look at different artists and styles in order to find influences that will assist me in creating a design that is well made and established through the use of stylistic features. Through the development I will also make sure to include primary sources in order for me to use within the advertising campaign section.

To create my outcome, I intend to experiment with both hand rendered and digital techniques in order to find the method that works well both for me and for the overall design. When creating the logo and accompanying imagery, I will begin using hand rendered techniques as I find it easier to sketch out how I want the designs to look first before editing them digitally. I feel this will add more definition to the designs I create once they are edited using a combination of Photoshop and Illustrator.

The first three weeks of the project will be used to create my ideas and concept pages to the standard of comprehensive notes. At this stage I will present my ideas, both abstract and literal, to my peers and tutors in order to find out which concepts appear the most effective and appealing. The following six weeks will be used as development where I will create the imagery and branding identity through technical experiments, artist influences and research. The final two weeks will be used for composition where I will use the imagery I have created to produce advertising materials.

In order to evaluate my work, I plan to make critical judgements throughout my development to find improvements. During this process I will also make sure to ask for the opinion of my peers both within my class and those outside of the group so that I have a varied response. The overall evaluation will be conducted by a team of people consisting of tutors and designers from industry from a presentation given by myself during an exhibition showcasing my work. This will give me real life experience as well as providing me with critiques from specialised and experienced individuals.

Michael Ranjis - Stitched (John Lewis)

John Lewis is a high-street store that is loved by British society, however they have produced research which shows some see it as an old fashioned, unexciting store that is a bit pricey. To fix this issue John Lewis wants a new service or product which will put the store in a new light. The product or service will either be an original idea or radically changing an existing item. The final piece must appeal to young adults, mid-20s and mid-30s, who like to stand out with unique products, this audience usually looks to retail brands for more than just shopping, they want inspiration and an experience.

As I am developing a service or product that will work in a large retail store I will research existing services in similar shops such as Selfridges, Debenhams and Marks & Spencer's. This will show what my service will be competing against and how my service could be developed to beat competitors. I will also research the history of John Lewis; this could reveal somethings that could be modernised.

Techniques that I will use include photography, which will likely be commercial styled. Experimenting with different materials and hand rendered techniques to create imagery that could potentially be used. Computer generated imagery such as vectors will likely play a big part due to the need for scalable imagery.

Initial ideas should be mindmapped and narrowed to a few. All initial pieces of research of artists, existing services, advertising campaigns should be complete with some initial primary images collected. Initial ideas should be completed with around 4 sophisticated concepts being developed. Two weeks of extensive experimentation with the imagery should begin and with potential final imagery being planned by the end of these two weeks.

During this project, I have my peers constantly around so they will be my most used method of evaluation, however I will also present my work to people who are not so informed to give me an unbiased feedback. With some pieces of work, I may hand it over to a specialised tutor to critique and give feedback.

Elliott Cosier - Freedom of Movement

I am designing graphics to debate around the theme of immigration to what lies at its heart: people. The effect recent events: Brexit and Donald Trump becoming president, have arguably increased hate crime towards people. By the end of the project, I will have hoped to produce a minimum of 5-10 posters investigating the issue of hatred and violence towards immigrants and refugees.

I will begin researching the impact of immigration, how it positively affects countries. Furthermore, I will be looking at why some people decide to discriminate against a person origin of birth. Afterwards, I will start to research why people decide to move countries – whether it is due to personal or professional reasons. Before I begin artist and typography, I will investigate the history of discrimination, compare it to modern day society and how, as human beings, we have evolved and became open minded towards people of all cultures, beliefs and sexuality. I will begin researching for artists who have produced similar work and try to get artist influence. With the influence, I hope to add aspects of it them into my final imagery.

I will be intending to use mostly photography but would not be against using traditional techniques such as drawing, painting etc. I have decided to go down the route, as I am stronger in the field than hand illustrated work. I will be aiming to complete each of the design phase without worrying about the next. This will be helping me, as it will allow me to focus on each task in hand and have it to the highest quality of work as possible.

The first couple of weeks will be all research – this will include gathering primary photos but I will always be doing this - before going into the experimental phase where I will take the research gathered, take inspiration, and try to come up with magazine page designs. Finally, onto the last 2 weeks, this is where I focus on refining the posters, which I will have currently produced.

For my final design, I will be producing an A0 board. I will want the final design to incorporate mix media. However will resort to techniques such as photography and digital editing if techniques that are more traditional do not work out. In conclusion, I will want a high quality finish in which I can be proud.

Nicholas Wilson - Frameworks

My passion is custom PC building and so I wanted to create a Brand identity for myself and my potential business.

I will create mind maps and research into other popular custom PC brands and companies. Once I have developed an idea around what my brand will be, I will then go into the production with the use of Illustrator and Photoshop. This will involve logo development and different concepts realised to help with the overall outcome of my identity of the company.
My aim is to visualise the importance of the Computer in today's modern age.

My time scale will be adhered to, starting with mind mapping and concept pages, followed by the research pages and then ending with the 1st out of 3 deadlines in the form of a presentation to my peers. This will be to identify which concept(s) will be the most appropriate / interesting in response to the brief. After this stage, the majority of the time (5-6 weeks) will be spent on developing the concepts further which will accumulate to at least 40 development pages. The 3rd deadline, would be the evidence of our outcome and presenting the work to professionals within the area.

Aimee Evans - Steam Coffee

Steam Coffee are a start-up coffee company which requires a new identity.
. I will produce a variety of coffee cups and possibly incorporate seasonal take-away cups as well as the stay in mugs/glasses. Also the menu boards, and A-frames.

I will be taking influence from coffee companies around me such as Costa Coffee, Starbucks and Café Nero. I will be able to produced detailed descriptions about the ways to make different coffees as I am a Barista at Costa Coffee. I can look at different coffee facts and incorporate them into the serving of drinks, whether that be on napkins or trays. Take inspiration from the drinks competitors have available, how to change them and make them more unique to my coffee shop.

My techniques will be mainly computer generated imagery, will include hand rendered work for textures or fonts and photography where needed.

I will evaluate if I gave myself enough/too much time for each section, if I needed more/less time. If I went too far off topic and gave myself too many things to do in the time. I will evaluate what went well and what went wrong, as well as the techniques that worked best and worst. I can also use peer evaluation to help give me multiple opinions on what they like don't like. If needed I will also get help from a specialised tutor to help give me advice and critique my work.

Callum Bell - Glory Hunter (Hasbro Gaming)

The theme for this project is promoting and creating a board game For all ages. My theme will be based on the journey of a footballer as they attempt to climb the ladder to the pinacle of the Premiership.

The game could incorporate elements that work in conjuction with EA Sports' highly acclaimed FIFA series.

I will research into various artists and subject centric material to help me create a visual that is both in keeping with my audience and exciting as a stand alone graphic.

I will be evaluating my FMP work by making notes as I am going along and then I will be doing a formal presentation to the class and getting feedback from them. I will also be writing a formal presentation about my work and then showing this to a professional panel and then get feedback from them.

Matthew Healey - Behind The Scenes

I have created a design to advertise MUBI.com. They provide a selective 30 film over 30 days service. These movies are prime selected and conscidered pieces of important movie culture.

My design is a competition in which 5 key props are shown from 5 movies which will be appearing in the current selected 30. The aim is to involve the viewer and test their film knowledge. If you can guess them then you have a chance of winning a free subscription. If not, then you may be intrigued to seek out the films in question.

Connor Eyres - Wisdom Without Words

Adobe Brief: As part of the Adobe Brief, they want a development of a set of prints/posters that illustrate a message(s). With this, the specification is to celebrate life lessons through illustration or photography in which I will create three poster designs or prints that will be submitted digitally (landscape or portrait with the dimensions 578x370mm for publication). These posters/prints must visually bring your insights into life.

According to the Adobe brief, "Can you communicate wisdom without words? They say a picture's worth a thousand. Create images that pack a punch and get to the core of the heartfelt advice you're trying to express. Though this is all about craft, so you can incorporate lettering if that's your illustrative style."

The media I will be using are all purely hand rendered techniques which I think is my strongest point within the creative area. I might be experimenting with using pencil to draw, shade and pens/ fine liner to refine my drawing. I may also be using inks such as Quinck ink, Brucho inks and Indian ink. I will be using these to add depth and tone to the piece and make it appealing to the eye. I will also be capturing primary images for inspiration. The time scale I am going to be following will be. For the first three weeks it will be mined mapping, concept pages and initial research of my subject area and theme, I will also be presenting my initial concepts to the group in which I will gather feedback and choose my final concepts. The next five weeks will be on developing my ideas and concepts in response to the inspiration I have taken from artists I have researched. And then the final two weeks will be dedicated to the final outcome and getting feedback from peers.
