Summer Show 2018

Grace Lockwood - Elite Industrial Supplies

Elite Industrial Supplies Ltd who, since 2001 have been supplying quality certified, hi visibility work wear, protective clothing, safety footwear, leisurewear, signs and banners.

I build up a mind map of ideas around the themes that I choose to take forward. The mind map is make up of literal and abstract ideas which, with the guidance from staff, explored a quite different alternative theme for my assignment. However, it was vital that I explore all my options to find the outcome that is the most effective.

I researched different artists, based on the ideas I chosen to take forward from my mind map, to help me get a starting point of my own design and influence the techniques I ended up experimenting with as possible outcomes. Other research I did was a different research of popular logo designs and advertisements. This way I could see how popular companies colour scheme and layout their work. Researching these different companies inspired me to follow in their steps to make my own designs as recognisable and looking as good as theirs. I found this information from sources such as, Behance, Pinterest, and Google images.

I used a variety of techniques, media and processes to get the best, professional outcome. The techniques that I choose from within traditional art is, collage, negative space, hatching, texture and more. Where with computer-based art, I experimented with techniques such as, cropping, photo manipulation, blending, opacity etc. Media for traditional art, I thought of using, acrylic paint, charcoal, watercolour, fine liner, ink, etc. Also, media for computer-based work I considered possibly using was, graphic art software, photography, printing, input devices and more. To see which media and technique works the best, with my design, I went through different processes of a mixture of both things to find which fits.

I kept logs of the time I spend on my work to see both how much work I'm doing and whether or not if it was enough for the level of work quality I'm aiming for. Another thing I did was continuously checking on is whether or not I'm on track with my deadlines that my tutor had set to help keep on top of myself.

I reviewed my FMP in critical and analytical ways by asking others who are in my class, others outside of my class who don't know about the project and always keeping up to date with my client. I noted down everyone's views and responses to my own ideas to help me make a decision, making it a lot easier for me and helping me to get the best final design.

Jordan Whittle - Harvey's Questions

I will create an advertisement and a series of Illustrations for a children's story book based on ideas presented to me from Stephen Bate, a graphic designer here at the college.

The book is called ' Harvey's Questions', and the theme is autism and how it affects people differently. The hope is that this book can be produced and sold to raise money for local autistic charities (perhaps a wider audience too if successful).

I will look at various illustrators to help inspire and influence my own work this will include Quinton Blake, Oliver Jeffers, Jeffrey Brown, Dr Seuss, The Mr Men books and any other children's book illustrators.

I will gather photography as my primary source imagery this will help with my drawings as references and help me simplify the imagery into my drawings. I intend to use my illustration skills to draw out the imagery and then go over the pencil drawings in pen, I will also use water colours and maybe some cut outs, once I have done with the practical art I can then scan the imagery in and refine the imagery before finally adding the text over the imagery this will be the process for each page of the book.

For the first three weeks I will come up with a mind map filled with possible ideas and notes and then with my four concepts and ideas I will develop them until I am pleased with them and then I will select which concept I will go forward with. I will ask my client to evaluate my work to see if there is anything that may be unintentionally offensive, once my client has looked over the book and if they decide they want to discuss changing or altering I would be glad to comply and make any of the necessary changes.

Kayew Yang - Yang's Chinese Takeaway

I have tasked myself to re-brand the logo of my Parents Fish and Chip Shop, Yangs. I must generate themes that are associated with the corporate Identity of Yangs and then come up with Ideas and concepts that I can share with my clients which are my parents. Firstly, I must identify the USP (Unique selling point) of Yangs and then do the necessary research for my ideas and concept. I'll be Looking at other artist influences and looking how they've done their composition. I will most likely be redesigning the Logo and creating mock-ups like Menu's and Plastic carrier bags. I will also be designing a big print so I must develop my initial ideas into a final piece.

Within this project, I'll be looking at artists and graphic designers that are appropriate to my brief which I can use as contextual influences. I will also be doing my own independent research like advertising strategies and how products are advertised etc. To develop my early ideas, I would create an initial brainstorming page and from that page, I would pick out key themes and develop them further into 4 concepts. Research into those themes would be needed to get a better

understanding and it could lead me to another interesting concept which could be in my noted down in my pages. During my development, I must follow the design process and document down all my experimentation to show how I got to my final image. I will mainly use Photoshop and Illustrator as they are my specialisms but I will also use mixed media like Illustrations and Photography to show my skill set.

The first 2 weeks I'll be coming up and refining my concept pages that I can take forward and present to my class. The following week, I'll be doing development until week 7.In my development weeks, I will be brainstorming my ideas even further, doing the appropriate artist research and experimenting with different techniques in my practical and computer work. By the end of week 7, I should have a rough final image to work with for the big print. In last 3 weeks, I'll be working on refining my final image and getting the composition right.

I will evaluate my work by going over my development and annotating what went well and what I could do to improve. I'll also have my clients to look at my work as its intended for them to use and whenever I'll get a chance, I'll ask others to look over my work that aren't familiar to what I'm doing. By doing this, it'll ensure that my work is communicating well to my target audience.

Simon Asai - Collaborate Marketing

For this assignment I am undertaking a live brief to create a promotional campaign in order to promote and create brand awareness for Collaborate Marketing. This is a brand new company which doesn't have many testimonials which is why it's important to build a well-structured brand image right from the start.

After speaking to the owner I found that he wants to create a more professional looking company. I will work towards creating a unique brand image, which will include a poster, new business cards and also some branded products such as mouse mats or clothing to promote his company. I will also create a business card for myself so that I can promote myself as a freelance designer. This will make me look more professional so I am more likely to be able to take clients on in the future.

During the first couple of weeks I am going to gather different ideas and do more research into the branding of the company. I am also going to keep continuous contact with my client so that I can keep him up to date and happy with the direction my work is going. I am also going to

brainstorm my ideas thoroughly and create at least four concept pages with my final ideas. I am then going to present my concepts to my class which will give me a better understanding of which idea is the strongest. I will also have a meeting with my client to make sure he is happy with the direction that my work is going. In order to meet my deadlines I am going to create a time line so that I can keep on top of my work and make sure that I can complete the project to the highest standard possible. During weeks three, four and five I will develop my chosen idea by experimenting with different medias. During weeks six and seven I will work on completing my final poster design and present it to my client.

I am going to experiment with a range of different techniques from more traditional methods to more modern methods using illustrator and Photoshop. I will also experiment with new techniques and put myself out of my comfort zone in order to create a unique campaign. I will also visit a range of different places such as museums and landmarks to take primary images that could inspire me in my work.

For the evaluation of my work I will make sure to contact my client and ask him for feedback. I will also ask my peers and tutors for insights and their opinion to see how it could be improved.

Lauren Ashcroft - Asirvia Go

I will be promoting the company Asirvia Go by creating a poster and cooperate identity. I will also create a business card for the client, Donna Singleton. Asirvia Go is a business which sells handy devices to other businesses which send out notifications to anyone's device from a 100-400 metre radius. The businesses who purchase this product can customize the notification being sent out to devices around them and can even add the link of their choice, meaning a website or social networking. It works 24/7 and is great for getting more potential customers and spreading awareness. I will be working towards raising awareness of the product and promoting what it does and how it's a great tool for businesses to use. I will need to break down the process in some way for the audience to understand the poster such as taking different pictures to tell a story in how the device works.

A few of my early ideas consisted of spreading the message, like people noticing the notifications and passing it on. Growth, which represents the company's success because of more and more clients getting exposure. The final concept was spotlight, which was the idea of throwing a spotlight of the company with Asirvia with all eyes on them. For some of the images Idecided to take some birds eye view shots with a drone to show people walking by. I was inspired by a few artists like Jean Faucheur, in which I experimented by using some of their techniques in my own work to see if they looked good. I also took inspiration from some light exposure shots and went out to take some of my own. This links to the transmit signals that the device sends out in Bluetooth. I researched logo types and to see which one would be best for the project. My intended techniques are to take lots of photos and to tell a story through the process. I experimented with lots of different techniques I want to take some photos of people on phones showing their notifications which they received. I need to also take a photo of the product itself and the outcomes of the deals being sent.

Finn Kirby - 3R's Tuition

I have been given the task of re branding 3Rs Tuition ltd. I currently work for them and they required a re brand of their current identity so I asked if I could assist and tackle this for my FMP.

I started off by looking into concepts that related to the company and also the industry that the company exisits in. This lead me to explore into ideas such as foundation and building your learning, as well as growth and structure. I combined these ideas into one coherent concept that featured lots of Rs and triangles. It was imperative that I related to the audience what the 3Rs meant. They mean reading, writing and arithmetic, although two of these words don't begin with an 'R' they do make the 'R' sound, so that's why the company is called 3Rs tuition.

The main artist research that influenced my creative process, was Bill Gold who created the artwork for the film A Clockwork Orange, with the impact of the triangular composition. This gave me some ideas on what i was going to do for my final design, I also looked at the film posters for High Rise, as this film also features triangular artwork and I found it interesting and inspiring for my final work.

Robert Taylor - Dissidence

The theme of my project is games, I will come up with the story for a game and create all the promotional materials for the product. I will work towards creating the graphic identity for the game and the company. This will include a poster and a logo as the starting presentation pieces. It will need to relate well to the Story, be eye-catching and most importantly memorable.

I will begin by looking at designs for other games. This will give me some inspiration when designing my pieces. By doing this it will allow me to see what styles are popular, important things to include and what shouldn't be there. By looking at games of a similar genre I will be able to ensure my designs aren't just copies of others. For my early ideas I am thinking about creating a dystopian future world and possibly taking influence from 80's sci-fi for my colour scheme. I really liked their use of pinks and purples. A recent example of a game with a similar style would be far cry blood dragon. I will also look at red faction which has a similar story arc. To link with the retro theme I will aim to create my piece using pixel art. I will look at the work of invader who does pixel art mosaics, I will check Behance and Deviant art as there are lots of artists using these sites to promote their design work and there are lots of pixel artists to look at.

For my final pieces I will use a few techniques. I want to use this project to develop my skills for university, by doing this it may give me the opportunity to refine existing skills and find and develop new ones. Using programs like Photoshop, Lightroom and illustrator I will be able to refine any of the imagery that I create. As part of my final piece I will make a tiled mosaic to go in with my final outcomes imagery. When designing the imagery I will use pixilart.com, this allows me to see how designs will look without having to use tiles. It will also let me see roughly how much of each colour I need. During my first few weeks I will research different artists, games stories and designs to help give me some inspiration for my game. I will then design all the imagery and if possible during the last 3 weeks, create the mosaic which will give me sufficient time to photograph, layout the type and add logos to the piece

When reviewing my work I will look at my pieces critically to ensure there are no sections I am not happy with. I will also ask my peers for their opinions on anything that could be changed and what they do and don't like to make sure the work is of the highest quality possible. I will also get an idea of how it could sell and whether it would be appealing.

Adam Fitzsimmons - Peace Garden

The High school, 'Sir Thomas Boteler High school' has begun work on a project known as the 'Peace Garden.' The peace Garden is a memorial of sorts to the World War 2 soldiers who lost their lives and anyone else affected by the dark time in history. Boteler High school would like artwork and potential promotional imagery for this project, but the imagery created should be flexible and able to be used outside of the Peace Garden as its own piece of artwork. These pieces of work will also be used in Priestley and throughout Boteler showing the unity under the same academy.

The Area designated to the Peace Garden isn't very large but has plenty of room to be decorated with various types of artwork, ranging from canvas pieces to sculptures. The focal imagery will relate to the war time efforts with poppies already playing a significant role in the garden and thus particular Imagery will be favourable. Furthermore, Sir Thomas Boteler High school is a Christian religious school and thus may be sensitive to particular pieces of imagery and messages which may be common on a topic such as this.
I will play a very significant role in this project however it is important for me to remember that I am not the only contributor to this project. Carl Gleavy, another Graphic Designer will also be working on this project and Sir Thomas Boteler High school themselves will be able to decide what does and doesn't go up.

As an extension task, I may conduct my own research and experimentation as to how imagery and promotional media created in this project could potentially be re-used or inspire the work of future projects of a similar nature. For example, marketing a gardening company.

Olivia Brown - Shell and Bone Craft Jewellery

The title of my project is Shell & Bone Craft as it is the business that has assigned my brief. The business is owned by my cousin who handcrafts his own jewellery out of seashells, bone and antlers. Necklaces and earrings are what he currently crafts and sells. Each piece is handcrafted which makes it unique and each one could have a different meaning. During this project I will work towards producing a rebrand of the business and a new theme of jewellery that will be advertised and promoted to grab the interest of new customers.

To begin my research I examined the jewellery being crafted and saw that the design started with traditional tribal influences because most pieces are made with carved bone/shell with a colourful stone in the centre. Some pieces are also made with antlers or a large sharp tooth/fake tusk from an animal that is usually made into a necklace; I feel like this relates to tribes centuries ago as they used to wear the teeth or tusk of the animal they have hunted as a necklace. Some of the bone necklaces have runes carved into it that could be of Celtic, Germanic or Nordic influence.

Current early ideas I am developing are possibly having a 'Sun & Moon' theme with a necklace/earrings that are designed to look like the sun, others looking like a crescent moon or stars. Another theme I would like to develop is profiling – if a customer wants a unique, meaningful and one-of-a-kind necklace but are not sure what design they would like; then they can fill out a few questions to do with their birth date, star sign, favourite season, etc. To determine what style of necklace/earrings would be made unique to them. Another theme I could develop is aimed at different cultures/styles such as Goth or made for events that include costumes.

The techniques I could use is hand-crafting parts of the jewellery with stone and possibly symbol or rune carvings. The jewellery materials are all natural objects which may make it easier to find the materials needed. I will also sketch different necklace designs depending on the concept/theme and I will also hand-render textures with a variety of media which I can later implement into my designs/sketches and final outcome. To evaluate my FMP I will set up a survey/questionnaire to get the opinions from a range of different people on how they feel about my design, does it work, how it could be improved and I will also get the opinion of my client.

Kerry-Ann Collar - Helping Hands

I will create a brand identity for Helping Hands, a cleaning service, including a logo, business card, letterhead and possibly a jumper for their uniform. I will get into contact with my client to find about what they are looking for in terms of themes and styles and the possible message that she would want to get across about her company. This will then help me brain storm ideas and to work specifically to what the client is looking for. I will also create a brand identity for myself. .

To start off my research I will look into different Cleaning companies to see what looks appealing, what style and technique works best, and if there are any trends which I will find through experimentation and research of artists such as KVArtwork.

I am planning on originally creating artwork for things such as Facebook mock-ups or business cards, and imagery for logos. This would mean that I initially create artwork traditionally and then scan or photograph it to then edit and take forward digitally. As for Typography, I am wanting it to be solely digital so that it can be replicated if need be. As I previously mentioned about backgrounds, I feel like it would be nice way to experiment with water colours, or watered down acrylics and marbling paint to represent clean water and germs. I could scan in art work to create digital aspects of it. However, if anything occurs to me while looking at other concepts, I will try and experiment with ideas as much as I can.

As for analysing my work, I will be continuously keeping in contact with my Client to ensure that I will reach an outcome that both of us are happy with the final creations. Something else I will attempt to do is contact various artists in the hope of getting a response from someone who is not involved in my work as well as getting various advice from my Tutors.

Thomas Heeley - Coffee Corner

I approached my boss at the coffee shop within my local church, and asked if I was able to promote the coffee shop to the general public. I am going to be creating innovative designs to promote the Coffee Corner. To do this, I am researching different types of logos and types of promotional work such as posters of mock-ups, Business cards, looking at different types of slogans, colour schemes and typography that will represent them in an abstract or Literal way.

I will look at the branding of coffee as it is something that I love and have on a regular basis. It is something, I will feel passionately about all the way through the unit and not regret my choice. So the Coffee bar at the church is one of the main ways they bring in people to get to know them and the community, so there promotion for this is vital because it will be promoting the coffee itself but it will also be a front for the church.

So the aim of this coffee shop is to gain a community that will get together to drink our coffee such as the congregations of people that will go Starbucks for their daily coffee or Costa. To start of this project I am going to be looking into coffee shops and trying to influence my own using there branding methods.

I will also be creating my own branding and will be creating mind maps to gain ideas all about coffee the church that the coffee shop is base within and other types of coffee shops and the flavours and different types of coffee such as lattes. I will then create my own brand of loyalty cards. Il also be looking at artist to influence how I will brand this company and how I will create my artistic work for them. So for this project I will be managing my time by setting myself clear deadlines for when my work shall be in for and, how many hours I will be working outside of my contact time.

I will be spending my first two weeks producing my ideas and concept pages alongside my Project proposal (Brief) and my brainstorm. The next 5 weeks producing research on my chosen concept where I will be creating Ideas, Looking at artists and researching different creative designs such as typography and logos and all the necessity's, that will link into my idea.

I will also work towards creating an outcome for my client and working alongside him in the design process. The last two weeks will then be spent finishing designs, and finalising them to create an outcome for my concept or live brief. I will then figure out the layout and how I will display my work.

Daniel Mercer - Howley Joinery

I will be working with a local joinery company called Howley Joinery. The task set is to recreate the brand identity and promoting the company through the best way possible, which I will do by creating a poster, business cards and possibly letterheads. I will need to first create a logo that will feature in the poster, this will give me a base for the design of the poster and will allow me to create a poster that is complimentary to the logo. I will be working towards a design that both shows of my knowledge and understanding of Graphic Design, but also can exceed the expectations of my client.

I will start by looking at other posters and imagery that designers have created to promote and symbolise the area of construction. By looking at construction as a whole, it offers a wider range of influences rather than if I just look at joinery or carpentry posters, this includes people like Richard Keeling, who produces colourful geometric images. As construction is a very broad topic, it will give me a chance to research different types of art movements, specifically ones like Art Deco, Bauhaus or Russian Constructivism, which use lines, shapes and symmetry in their works, not unlike a joinery or a carpenter uses measurements to get the right fit for an object. In order to create my imagery and my logo designs, I will use a mix of traditional and modern techniques and processes, these will include experimenting with drawing, painting and possibly using inks to create certain effects. I can also use established artists to influence me during this project especially artists like Walter Gropius.
I may use 3D work in my project, creating something out of wood, much like a carpenter or a joiner does. Photography could be used in this project to capture the main imagery for the poster.

After each stage of the design process I will feedback to the client and have the client choose what designs they like and how they would like to proceed.

Lewis Southern -AJUK

AJUK is an independent property surveyors company. I had previously completed work experience here during my time at high school and had a good understanding of both how the company operates and how they were branded at the time. Fortunately the client was very excited to hear that I wanted to base my final project on a re-brand of his company and as it turned out he had been wanting to overhaul his branding for a long time, also noting that he had previously a bad experience with a graphic design firm in London.

Once I had determined my brief I began the ideas development phase of the design in which I tried to get as much ideas as possible written down before deciding on which were the best and proceeding. I was also creating a lot of mock-up logos during this time and sending them off to the client for review so as to get a better understanding of the sort of things he was looking for. I settled on five different concept themes derived from the ideas development phase and after much consideration decided to go with the concept of Fairy-tales. Some of my early influences include logos such as the FedEx logo and artists such as Jon Hughes due to the simplicity.

Now that I had decided on my concept idea I needed to determine how best to represent it within a final outcome. I created three new concept ideas. The strongest of these concept ideas was the idea of Elements and Durability. Essentially the wolf in the three little pigs would be represented metaphorically through the elements (Fire, Earth, Water and Air). I wanted to capture imagery of these elements affecting the three different house materials (Paper, Wood and Brick) and exposing them for their weaknesses. I realised that I needed to work a lot with Photography as I would need to capture primary sources of the three different materials and elements. I also realised that I was going to need to work extensively within Photoshop in order to produce some of the more striking visual elements I had envisioned.
