India Hesketh - Survival or Adaption My FMP is a Textile design piece, using a wooden structure as it's base. The idea behind it was to help endangered species to adapt to the environment we are creating. I wanted to show this through making a bee sanctuary; bee's was the endangered species I chose, I believe that by reusing old materials and using our creative thinking to create something that will help them survive, but also we can learn why we need bees and why they are important to our world. I think it's important to show how important Bee's are to our environment, they pollinate the earth, help our nature grow, if we didn't have bee's son everything would die. So by using art as a way of showing this I can help bees survive and teach our younger generation how important this cause is. My idea from the start was that my sanctuary was going to be, not only suitable for bees, but also aesthetically pleasing to my audience as well. I wanted to fill my sanctuary with lots of bee homes, where bees can come and go if the weather wasn't suitable for them. I planned on planting flowers in and around the sanctuary so bees had access to them, this way they have fresh clean flowers that haven't been ruined by pesticides, and to use them to pollinate the earth. However I also planned to make this piece not just a bee sanctuary but also a sculpture where adults and children can come and look and learn about what they can do to help bees survive. I find it important that my outcome would teach others, inspire others to try in anyway they can to help these endangered species, I think important to not only teach our generation but also the younger generation that's next to come. I had many influences and inspirations when doing this project, some were artists that try to create their work using organic and biodegradable materials, and others were simple articles I read up on. There were lots of them stating all the simple things we can do to help bees survive, something so simple as planting bee friendly flowers. However there are lots of cases of people having their very own bee sanctuaries, helping them when it comes to pollinating, producing honey, and during hibernation in winter. After needing these I only got more inspired to create my own version of a bee sanctuary. I felt like I could create one using textiles to show that they are important and they aren't as threating as they are made out to be, and most of all they need our help. I use a range of techniques for this outcome; I wanted to make it look full and exciting, so by doing lots of techniques I could achieve that goal. I used screen-printing for one, screen-printing onto the spiral steps of my sanctuary of bee motifs, this is a visual appearance for people passing by, it shows people what this sanctuary is for, and draws them it to look some more. I also tried crocheting; creating chains so that bees can land on them and pockets to grow flowers out of. That was a technique I self taught myself as I wanted to recreate macramé in my work. But as well as macramé I did embroidery and weaving too, even though I have done these techniques before, I felt like they would suit this project well and link in with the other techniques well. I believe with a busy, full and exciting piece it will draw people in, and the bright expressive colours with plants growing through crocheted pockets, will draw bees in too. To create a creative atmosphere and teach our generations how our creative skills can help the bees to survive. |

Poppy Crowder-Marklove - Box Cafe My exhibition space was inspired by Interior Design and Upcycling, which are two elements that I have really grew passionate for. I decided to explore physical space and how I could design and construct a fully functioning cafe, almost like a pop-up or a stall. A cafe should be a warm, welcoming area and should also provide a relaxing social space, this is what I have been able to achieve. The majority of elements of the cafe are found objects, which I have been able to transform and shift into components, all contributing to the Box Cafe. I have mainly focused on using pretty solid materials and media, such as wood and glass, which has enabled me to explore building furniture and creating assemblage like pieces. My work portrays eclectics tastes, there is no pinpointed style or theme within the cafe. I was inspired by artists such as Kurt Schwitters and Damian Hirst, which led into creating the wax pieces and box arrangements. The use of wax in the wall art has been used as a tool for preservation, in both a literal and metaphorical sense. I had collected a variety of bottles from local landslides on old mill sites, some which date back from around the 1940's. I have been able to use local historical items and present them in a new light, using wax in a sense of preserving history. For the Flower Frames, the flowers have been fully withheld in the wax, which maintains and captures the petals; enhancing their delicacy. I find this piece to be quite a juxtaposition - exposing these flowers and capturing them in a real fragility, however displaying them on such a robust, strong material such as pallet wood. These materials are heavily contrasting, but combined to create something fresh.

Casey Edwards - Neurocardiology Where many believe that conscious awareness originates in the brain alone, recent scientific research suggests that consciousness actually emerges from the brain and the body acting together. This growing body of evidence suggests that the heart plays a particularly significant role in this process, and even though recent scientific research about the connection between the heart and the brain has shown that the heart actually sends more signals to the brain than the brain does to the heart. Traditionally the study of communication pathways between the head and the heart has been approached from a one-sided perspective, focusing primarily on the heart's responses to the brain's commands. However, that communication between the heart and the brain is actually a dynamic, ongoing two-way dialogue, with each organ continuously influencing the way in which the other functions. The signals of our hearts actually have a significant effect on the way in which your brain functions - influencing emotional processing as well as higher cognitive faculties such as attention, perception, memory, and problem-solving. In other words, not only does your heart respond to the brain, but your brain continuously responds to your heart. Research has shown that our hearts communicate with our brains in four major ways: neurologically (through the transmissions of nerve impulse), biochemically (via hormones and neurotransmitters), bio-physically (through pressure waves), and energetically (through electromagnetic field interactions). Communication along all of these conducts significantly affects the brain's activity. Moreover, research shows that the messages the heart send to the brain can also affect performance. Far more than a simple pump, as was once believed, the heart is now recognized by scientists as a highly complex system with its own functional "brain." - HeartMath Research in the new discipline of neurocardiology has shown that the heart is a sensory organ and sophisticated center for receiving and processing information. The nervous system present within our hearts (also referred to as the heart brain) enables our hearts to learn, remember and to make functional decisions independent of our brain's cerebral cortex. In addition to the sophisticated neural communication network linking the heart with the brain and body, the heart also communicates information to the brain and throughout the body via electromagnetic field interactions that conducts a powerful influence on processes through the body. |

Caitlyn Binks - Sexism For this project, I decided I wanted to look at language, specifically the language used towards women in everyday life, and how sexist and violent terms are normalised as part of our culture. My research led me to the similarities between violent and sexual language; how we use the same terms for both subjects, and how many words are defined as or used as specifically for referring to women. I discovered the Oxford Dictionary had caused controversy when someone had pointed out the sexist defintions they had for certain words, which the defining sentences all were used in sexist or derogatory ways towards women. Rabid, shrill and promiscuous were words brought to attention, and the one I've chosen to focus on - nagging, with the definition of 'a nagging wife'. Since this controversy, the Oxford Dictionary and other sites have changed the definitions to more gender neutral or completely different definitions, yet the word 'nagging' has always and still is only associated to women, never men. The nagging wife character is a stereotype that can be found throughout history, and is still relevant today. This was an idea I wanted to play with and show a domestic setting manipulated with the word 'nagging' to draw attention to the fact this word will always be defined as being used towards wives who, when they ask for minimal help, are thought of negatively, and as not fulfilling their duties as a wife. With our language ever evolving, will this word always be used against women, or will it finally die out?

Abbi Rossi - Longevity The theme of my work is longevity. Longevity means long life so in the fashion industry we are trying to increase the life of clothing to make a more sustainable fashion industry. By designing and making clothing with a longer life we can keep our clothing for longer, we won't have to replace our clothing as often and it will reduce the amount of discarded clothing in landfill sites. To increase the longevity of clothing we must increase the durability of the clothing that is |
being made. The durability of the clothing can be physical and emotional durable. I looked at the strength and durability of different fabrics and researched the properties of different fabrics to find out if they are eco-friendly, ethical, made from natural fibres or recycled material. I created a series of garments that were strong and durable so that they were long lasting and practical to wear. To do |
this I used cling film, denim and bubble wrap to make my outcomes. I used these materials as denim is a very strong and durable also, cling film and bubble wrap are used to protect and preserve items so I used the materials in way to make them strong enough to construct garments. |

Hannah Brown - Noitcelfer Fles In this piece I have tried to communicate the struggles that young women face in todays society, when it comes to the idea of beauty. I chose to look at this topic as I feel like although we are so aware of how damaging the media can be, we still allow ourselves to connect with it, despite how unhealthy it is for our mental health. |
Through completing a survey at the start of my project ,which asked my peers personal questions about their self image, I was quite shocked to understand how brutal some of the hate was that women received based on their physical appearance. I wanted to display this in an emotive way and I feel as though my portraits evoke a raw emotion and also convey a message of power to the audience that |
signifies a defiance against the hate as well as displaying a sense of vulnerability in the fact that they are all not wearing makeup. |

Genevieve Chriscoli - Death and Funerals When we normally think about death the image of funerals, with people wearing black, come to mind. However we normally only thing about subjects like that when they are forced upon us and we have no choice. Although I would argue that we as a nation don't deal with death really well and don't talk about it enough so when it does happen it comes as a massive shock. I feel that if we broke down those barriers and talked more openly about it, it wouldn't be as much of a shock to the system. The Day of the Dead is a perfect example of breaking down those barriers as they dedicate 2 whole days to celebrating the dead, with lots of celebrations, parties and songs, |
we don't see them looking all sad and miserable when we see pictures of those 2 days, in fact they look extremely happy. We see in films all the time people dying, but we know that it's not real and no one cares about it, the same in books, although they are more effective than films the same concept applies. In books such as Harry Potter for instance, when Dumbledore says to Harry, "To the well organised mind, death is but the next great adventure", that is what Voldemort fears above all, the unknown. The unknown about what happens after you die and so he does everything in his power to make sure that he never has to find out, because he's scared. |
This applies in real life, that people are too scared of it and so don't talk about it, and I feel that this is something that can change. In some cases it's the same with metal health, if you can't see it it's not there, this attitude is beginning to change, slowly, but it's changing. I feel that what I have achieved in this project I can help to break down these barriers and help to tackle peoples fear of death. I can help people to rethink about death no matter what religion you have or don't have, we can all see the beauty in death, of remembering that person's life through funny stories and memories which in my opinion beats feeling sad and miserable all the time. |

Tom Heeley - Board Games - Bring Back Social Groups Board games are a great way to get to know people, become part of a social group and to help you brain, strategize and learn to puzzle solve. For my project I created a board game, created to make you really think and understand people, a game built of truths and lies, allowing you to question your friends and deceive them or be deceived by them. A game where you will trust no one. |
I was inspired to create this game to reflect on some social groups, Not every group is perfect, there are friends that will deceive you and maybe you will even deceive them, this reflects our nature for survival, hence the idea of wild woodland animals who live only to survive. Each player will take the role of one of these animals within the game, gaining the ability of that animal, and when the night phase come each character will close their eyes, and in turn order characters will wake up and take their action, some to cause mayhem, some to find out who is on their team, some to see who the bad characters are, others simply sit back and relax, till the night phase is over. |
My art work has been inspired by several board game illustrators such as Maria Cardouat, Eugene and Luises, and other artists such as Sanna Annukka and Jon Burgerman. I also researched into different articles such as the social benefits of board games, how they are good for the mind and how there are making a comeback. |

Fin Kirby - Beauty of Healthy food My FMP is about fruit and the beauty of healthy food, it started off as a corporate identity graphic design piece for a company called The natural detox which has been the basis for all of the designs, when I began designing for the company I used illustrator and drawing by hand to create the logo and banner you see above, I soon began testing out more abstract ideas branching out into using different forms of media to create them. I used backlit photography to create the close up shots of the fruit, they represent the beauty of fruit and show how fruit is in some ways akin to us and our bodies, it shows the similarity between the blood cell like pomegranate; the vein filled lime and the complex intricacies of the brain like grapefruit. The laser cut fruit was an idea I had come up with for promotional design for the business, they an interesting take on marketing and advertising because they aren't going to last forever, they show the journey that the body goes on without healthy food in the diet which I thought was an interesting take on the issue of the fruit going off. Finally the crushed fruit is conceptual art, they started off alongside crushed unhealthy counterparts that would put you off eating McDonalds forever. I did change this however and decided I wanted to show the beauty in the fruit rather than the horrors behind fast food, the crushed lime, pomegranate and grapefruit are all interesting patterns on the page and I like the idea that they almost tell the story of being consumed and absorbed into our bodies for nutrients. |

Grace Lockwood - Toxic Masculinity In this Final Major Project, the idea that I had to begin as a starting point from my research was the theme of rebranding. I created mind maps to extend on the subject to pick up on keywords that could help me towards my research. I had found a range of articles that show examples of rebranding, poor marketing decisions "Brands gone bad how they are reinventing themselves" to more concerning use of fashion to represent extremist ideals "What happens to a clothing brand when its adopted by extremist. As I researched, I found that there were links to ideas generated in my toxic masculinity concept. It was an extension on work that I had already started on in previous projects. Here I looked further into researching the subject and seeing ways companies are incorporating the message into advertisement. Articles that I had found that mentioned companies using toxic masculinity as a marketing strategy, I also interviewed a range of males of different ages and demographics. This and the branding and advisement of male fashion had shown there is a bias towards stereotypical male ideals but does not reflect the actual perception that males have identified themselves as. My intension was to explore rebranding of males using fashion communication and graphics as my tool. |

Kelsie Winch - The Box and the Bubble 'The Box and The Bubble' is all about the way that an individual experiences the world and it's art . the project was born out of the curiosity to understand how a group of people would react when put through the same experience ( titled the box). An experience is unique to an individual and no two people can truly experience the same thing, however i wanted to see just how similar a group of individuals experiences can be. As an individual i have the belief that all people have access to a place of potential creativity (the bubble) but only some are able to interpret this and create art from it. The box was a place in which individuals were put under different conditions to try and tap into the bubble and the world around them. From this experiment i used the experience of the group to create a range of abstract work. Most thoughts are abstract and emotions can be felt through sound and colour so forcing it into a realistic style would warp the experience, so this project suited a more abstract style. In the project i also wanted to push the definition of art and the thought that art is just restricted to realistic paintings in a gallery that you can't touch. My work is made to be felt as that's how it was made, to fully understand the work you have to interact with it. The three individual pieces represent an individual's experience, my own experience and a culmination of all of the groups experiences (left to right). |

Niamh Wynne - Ultimate Happiness For the most part, our lives are devoted to achieving what we believe will create the 'ultimate' happiness; A life of eternal sunshine, without any rain. But why is it so hard to eradicate the human tendency to feel sad? Why is suffering an inescapable part of life? How do we deal with it? This angled wall plastered with a heap of jumbled heart-inducing literature, drawings, paintings and music, explores the question, "Does depressing art relieve the suffering of those consuming it, or perpetuate it more?". I listened to and studied artists who I felt aligned or resonated with my daily and ever-changing emotions during my Final Major Project. I delved deep, dismantling the thinking and feelings of their works, which inescapably reflected something about their suffering and realisations as individuals, which they themselves had made into their own art. In particular, I questioned why certain songs, films or paintings always caused that sudden upwelling of unmistakable pain and suffering I had so clearly been suppressing and harbouring until that moment. It's as if their art gave me a lease to unload all my confused and muddled emotional baggage, and guided me into creating something physical and tangible, in whatever way I wanted. Arguably, the repetitive experience of consuming depressing and incredibly emotive art, exacerbated my suppressed emotions, as consuming the pain of others most definitely reminds you of your own. However, each one of their works have also allowed me to utilise the major presence of provoked negative feelings, into pieces of individualised and emotive confessional works of art. If anything, I've realised that art is something we do regardless of our mood, but in a time of pain and hurt, art especially is a thing we can console and find commonality with. Through the making of art, it's easier to accept pain as a necessary thing, and to greet it with a familiar positive embrace, so we no longer fear it, or crumble from it. I've realised that the pain caused in our lives is often the thing which teaches us best, because it excludes no one. But it all seems worth it, if art is the product of such an unfair truth. |

Lauren Ashcroft - Repurposing and Upcycling My FMP is all about repurposing and upcycling old objects into modern new designs. I was motivated by the rise in climate change and the effects it has on our planet. There's more and more landfill every day that is taking up our land and depriving our world of its natural beauty. This has inspired me to try and find a solution to prevent damage and to inspire others to make an effort to upcycle old objects that would have otherwise been dumped into landfill. If more people could upcycle old objects into new ones that people enjoy, the world would be cleaner and better for our environment. I hope my work has inspired some new and fun ideas for their own upcycling projects for the future. |

Andreea Mate - Manmade Vs Nature The aim of my project was to compare the natural aspect, specifically looking at the body and that which is man made which has been inspired by nature. This is specifically called biomimicry where scientists use nature as a form of inspiration for their designs. Some of the questions that came to mind when doing this project were why is it that nature seems to have all the answers and helps us so much with technological advances? Since nature is more complicated and has so many more mechanisms than the intelligent design inspired by it is there not a possibility for nature itself to be intelligently designed? There is a lot in nature that scientists are still trying to copy and imitate. The example of the idea reflects this with the eye and camera. The camera has a lot of mechanisms inspired by the eye, even though the eye is inherently more complicated. For example it has 120 million rods and cones which are all connected in a way for us to see the way that we do and give us sight. The brain is the other canvas in the piece which I compared to a computer chip. Again the computer chip is inspired and has a lot of similarities to the brain in its connections and how it stores information. Each individual neuron can form thousands of links with other neurons in this way, giving a typical brain well over 100 trillion synapses (up to 1,000 trillion, by some estimates). Lastly is the pieces with the DNA. my reasoning behind this was that DNA is described by scientists as being 'The Book of Life'. Hence why I used book pages for the canvas to show that connection and I also compared it to computer code as DNA is a structured, ordered code that is what makes every living thing is this world different and is the code for features, colours, size, everything about a living object or person is written in their DNA. The DNA link my other two ideas on the canvas' together, the man made aspect and the natural aspect. |

Yasmine Gawthorpe - Global Warming Over the past 40 years the sea level has risen dramatically due to the increasing effects of Global Warming and this issue should be addressed immediately. This piece is a visual representation of how much the sea level has increased since 1970 and what the predictions are for the next 70 years to come. One of the major concerns relating to the rising sea level is the rate of erosion along the coast lines, each sculpture depicts what the British coast looked like during that specific year and again the projections for the future. I chose this theme because I feel passionate about the Earth and its current state, my plan with this exhibition is to be able to show how damaged our earth is and bring attention to the potential long term consequences, I wish to be able to shock people into making a change whether it be a big or smaller change. Furthemore, within my exhibition is a small list containing information about how the everyday person can make small changes to do their part in reducing Global Warming. |

Lucja Dabrowska - Consumerism This exhibition is solely based on the idea of Consumerism, Materialism with hinted comments on a capitalist, contemporary society and throughout time. The aim of this exhibition is to let the viewer reflect on their own consumer lifestyle and mindset in an ambiguous and debatable way by leaving them questioning their consciousness and if they really are in control of their urges and desires. The set of four still life photographs act as a mirror to the viewer and are a comment on the idea that our desires control us via the pleasure principle, when we desire something and do not achieve to attain it we suffer the feeling of being un-pleased whilst demanding to be pleased instantly. The prints are portrayed as a reflection on oneself as the prints themselves are reversed - the whole image is the wrong way around - this is another way for the viewer to feel slight discomfort and a feeling of being mirrored (open to interpretation). An exploration into various artists meant different outlooks on consumerism - the receipts are there to depict the other side of buying and selling - the digital footprint one holds from a purchase. Jordan Whittle - Automation For my Final Major Project I developed my idea around the theme of automation and from here I created a sculpture of a robot that would act as a copy of me, the idea being that over time improvements would be made to the robot so that once I have died the robot would be a suitable automated imitation of me and act out similar thoughts and actions that I would have. When creating the robot my first step was to illustrate how it could possibly look through creating a series of sketches and using reference imagery I had gathered for inspiration to help with the style and look of the robot. Then once I had a general idea of how I want the automaton to look, I constructed early models experimenting with aspects of the robots design, making modifications and improvements to each version until the completed robot for the project.

Charlotte Leigh - Bub Beelzebub (bub) is a nine centuries old hellhound and is at that awkward stage of not being a puppy anymore but is still not quite an adult either. Bub is a mongrel breed and no one is entirely sure what he is however it has been confirmed that he is at least part church grim, black shuck, Okuri-inu and the rest is a mystery thought there is some speculation that he might have some lich in him or even be related to some form of eldritch horror given his physical attributes. He is currently finishing the last parts of his training to become a graveyard guard and soul seeker, like the many hellhounds before him. The ideas behind this project was very much a continuation of my last project "beauty of destruction" specifically focusing on "death and the afterlife" where I work to create a set basic on the Greek afterlife. With this theme in mind I decided I was going to explore the monsters and mythology as I felt that it was relevant and interesting as there was a lot could do and many characters to explore, especially seeing as I wanted to explore puppetry and hopefully create an interesting and unique creature.

Holly Sheen - Liminal Space The theme I chose for my project was 'Liminal Space'. Liminality refers to the threshold between two set points, it is a transitional period that can be seen in both physical and personal forms. For example a service station in the middle of a big journey could be a liminal space, however so could a time in an individual's life when they are between two stages, e.g. leaving a job and looking for a new one. For my exhibition I have looked at the idea of passage and how we move through these different stages. I began by looking into individual areas such as stairwells, waiting rooms and stations, however it was the distinct change that could be felt between occupied and unoccupied spaces that really fascinated me. I have represented the idea of people in motion with the use of human form and figures and have used fabric, paint and ink to produce a multi layered piece of work, where I feel the message of liminality can truly be seen.

Connor McCann - Stem Cells A stem cell is an undifferentiated cell of a multicellular organism which is capable of giving rise to indefinitely more cells of the same type, and from which certain other kinds of cell arise by differentiation. My project is to show how stem cells have the ability to create different organs. The sand represents stem cells, and the hourglass is in the shape of a brain and a heart. As the sands of time fill, it creates the specific organ.

Jessicca Eccleston - A Nation Divided In my final major project, I explored the negative impact of Brexit in regards to culture, I began with the influx of anti-immigration articles during the lead up to major political decisions, such as Brexit within the UK as well as Trump's election to presidency in America, and how this can be used to manipulate and warp a societies mind set in regards to entire masses of people. The gradual progression of my project allowed me to touch upon the racist undertones of today's political arena, in addition to the damning effects of a negative media presence. Furthermore, I found that by creating a series of collage work I was able to juxtapose humour and irony with a disillusioned vision of today's society. I found that by relating and basing my work off of an issue that is very prevalent within today's news, I was able to develop a strong contextual background within my work. In my final exhibition, I wanted to touch upon themes of isolation, by setting the table for one I sought to emphasise how Great Britain has ultimately decided to segregate itself from the EU and how we have become a divided nation. |

Calvin Jake Ruelo - Space Within This piece of work is based on the title "Space Within". I wanted to create a piece of work inspired by my previous two models, which worked the best. The idea was to combine my cube of interlocking kebab skewers with my multi coloured "spider web" model. Originally I wanted to create a piece which would combine coloured yarn and bamboo sticks in order to create a minimal space which would allow/tempt viewers to try to enter my piece - thus relating to my chosen title "Space Within". However, whilst considering this idea, I realised how difficult this would be to construct and thus I decided to settle with creating a more aesthetically pleasing abstract piece of work, which incorporates a bamboo human figure with coloured yarn wrapped around the whole piece.

Weronika Brzozowska - Order and Chaos "Nature uses only the longest threads to weave her patterns, so each small piece of her fabric reveals the organisation of the entire tapestry." Through my practise, I wish to express my feelings and beliefs about my surroundings. My observations and studies in philosophy and art have led me to the belief that what surrounds us can only be described as vast complexity, and is beyond our comprehension. The natural world is a tapestry of small, yet intricate systems which together form an even more complex web of organization which we are only a small part of. We attempt to explain this complexity through studies of both vast and microscopic scale; revealing new information daily through fractals and scientific investigation, but despite this we are still truly surrounded by what appears to be chaos. |
It has always interested me how science reveals factual information about the way the world works, however our experience of the world without science would suggest that the world is chaotic and we have no control over what's going to happen. Science proves that there are systems and layers of methodology which weave different aspects of the world together, despite our experience suggesting the opposite. My conclusion is that a balance of both order and chaos is needed in order for life to be whole, and we are never going to fully understand the world as its omnipresent growth is more powerful than our understanding of it. Throughout my FMP I focussed on depicting order and chaos as a couple as opposed to two separate parts, like we see in nature and human interaction. I worked on creating sculptural pieces using a complex and systematic method, but then using them to cast chaotic shadows. The pieces and the shadows are one and the same, yet their metaphysical form portrays |
itself differently from their shadow; similarly to how in nature the scientific explanation of a certain thing is a different portrayal from its seemingness at first glance, or a first hand experience of said thing. The two pieces together form an ongoing shadow installation of interconnectivity in which they form a 'whole', like a piece of ever changing still life. |

Dominique Haughton - What Remains My Final Major Project is called "What Remains" My goal for this project was to show what is left behind when we die. I wanted to portray how the living leave remains such as bones and skeletons behind even when they have died and decayed. I like the idea that we can study from the matter left behind and how we can find out about how something has lived just by looking at such objects. I am very fascinated by the structure of the skeletons and the contrast between the species natural form and its structure underneath. For this exhibition I have displayed six etchings and three sculptural models with their shadows. The concept behind the etching was that I wanted to show the different layers of the species such as their skulls and skin, I chose red ink to make the two prints more prominent. The idea behind my three-dimensional models were that I wanted to express a current issue that we have today, the issue being plastic pollution. Plastic has been a major concern in the world from the 1950s up to 2019, an estimated 6.4 billion tons of plastic has been produced worldwide; Most of which still exists on the earth today as plastic pollution. Our world's species are also being significantly impacted by our plastic problem as something as simple as a plastic bag will kill numerous animals because they take so long to disintegrate. An animal that dies from the bag will decompose and the bag will be released, another animal could harmlessly fall victim and once again eat the same bag. I wanted to capture this issue in my project as I don't think it is thought about enough and it is having a critical impact on our planet. |

Caitlin Brookfield - Irezumi and Edo Japan My project focuses on Japan during the Edo period and paying homage to the art of ukiyo-e through my tattoo designs and installation. I have a huge interest in tattooing and I find Japanese art and their culture particularly fascinating; I was initially drawn to the subject through their strict laws on the practice of tattooing, which I researched on my last project. I think the woodblock prints, particularly from the 17th century, translate amazingly into tattoos and onto skin |
which led me to research more into the Edo period and the Yoshiwara district. I found it strange that Japan had such strict laws around the practice of tattooing up until recently; and that you don't see more ukiyo-e style tattoos rather than the typical koi, peonies and water. I wanted to pay homage to their culture and art by recreating some traditional items and displaying them in a suggestion of a Japanese room. |
Visitors are more than welcome to make their own ema – a Japanese wishing plaque that are traditionally left at shrines or temples - and tie it with ribbon on the rope above my space. I thought it would be a nice idea to leave wishes, prayers or a little illustration in my space; as I want my exhibition to be immersive not just something you look at from a distance. |

Keeley Forrester - Sexual Harassment My project is based on the idea of sexual harassment of women and girls, my aim is to create something that makes people aware of the issue and how this needs to be stopped. The concept I have chosen to use is the idea of a flower representing the mental health of a woman, and displaying the flower in different ways to show the difference in mental state of somebody who has experienced sexual harassment/assault. I have |
created three images which show a healthy flower, a slightly damaged flower and a decayed flower to show how, the way women are treated reflects how they feel and their mental health. The healthy flower is to show how when women are treated with respect they will 'bloom' and also eventually, from their experiences they will not let it define who they are. The slightly damaged flower is to show the effect that |
words have on women and how being 'catcalled' and 'wolf whistled' does actually affect them mentally. The decayed flower is there to show the effects of physical sexual harassment/assault as this would affect women more as it is an invasion of their space and bodies. I feel very passionate about this project as 85% of women aged 18-24 have experienced sexual harassment which is a very large percentage. |

Lucianne Canavan - Activism Through Art For my FMP I have decided to look into artistic activism and how this can provide a platform to spark controversial conversations between the audience on the topics I have covered i.e- politics, the environmental crisis. In order to bring about social change, I believe that as a nation we need to understand one another and discuss our thoughts and opinions civilly so that we can resolve our differences. I also used my practice to explore my own thoughts and feelings on these subjects to voice my own frustration toward the world around me, in hope to cause a reaction. Inspired by re-using disposable plastic waste to create contextual narratives implying that it is ruining our Earth and the vast species that inhabit it with us, and how their suffering along with our own is solely our responsibility and we have well and truly 'fucked it'. Along with experimenting with how to vocalize, within my art, the disaster that is 'Brexit' and the disastrous MP's leading the public's view and miscommunication in the media (following the article 'pomme de terror' in particular looking at the Gilets Jaunes movement in France) and within the 'Brexit' campaigns. Using news articles and keeping up to date with current affairs I was able to explore the paranoia and fear caused by these miscommunications and 'fake news', and the impact it can have on the public's well-being. In recent years I have witnessed decisions being made that will affect predominantly my generations future and younger generations also, however we had no say or control over the outcome of these decisions such as 'Brexit' and the decisions made that have now had a negative impact on our environment and well-being as a whole. We are now left with only '12 years to save the planet' meaning we need to act now all together rather than later as this has to be a whole world effort. As Greta Thunberg (16 year old, Swedish, climate activist) said "I want you to act like the house is on fire. I want you to panic." I too wanted to create an overwhelming sense of panic and terror to demonstrate the urgency that the whole world should feel for our current circumstances; our whole world is on fire and our people are burning each other when we should all be putting the fire out together. |
