Vladimir Shulyak - Animal Aid I have chosen the theme of Animal Cruelty for my final exam I have designed a poster toadvertise the Uk's largest animal rights group. I have chosen earthy colours for the poster and the main image features a paw print revealing various animals which need conserving. |
Daniel Gladman - Anti Smoking Campaign
The poster is influenced by the western films of the late 60's. The dynamite is reprented by the cigarettes and the plunger is the self destruction that smoking inflicts. The typography was developed from the wanted posters from the wild west, I tried to use the same sort of techniques by making my type look like it has been stamped on for added texture effects and the perspective of this brings out some great 2 dimensional and 3 dimensional effects on and off the page.

Chloe Franklin - Reflection Restaurant The exam question I chose was ‘Reflection’ this was to revitalise a restaurant in a fashionable way by creating a poster to advertise the restaurant, which contained details and imagery. I am looking to promote the restaurant in a fashionable and modern way aiming at a target audience of around 20-30. I have based the restaurant around the theme of 'Alice through the looking glass'. Both the decor and the food on offer will be representive of the theme. The menu will also have the feel of a story book so that visiting the restaurant is infact an entire experience. |
Daniel Brown - Anti Drugs Campaign
A company called ‘Say No!’ has recently contacted me in regards to the promotion of their organisation. I have been asked as a graphic designer to thoroughly communicate with the public through the use of a range of graphic work in regards to the concern of drug addiction in the United Kingdom. As a graphic designer, I have therefore been asked to create somewhat a campaigne to raise the awareness of drug use and indeed, drug addiction.
Drug use is becoming more common throughout the UK and therefore it is important that as a designer, the work I will produce for the organisation, Say No! will therefore be extrvagant in terms of attractiveness and an eye-catching format. The campaign is to be promoted in a thorough way remembering the importance of our target audience, being adults, teenagers and even younger high school students who in todays world, are all becoming more aware of the different types of drugs and the ways in which they are used. Are we influenced by the media and celebrities that we hear about on a day-to-day basis? It’s important that this campaign promises to turn that around and attract a mass amount of the public who in hope, will support the campaign and therefore revitalise the reputation and indeed, the companys image/name in order to prevent the use of drugs before addiction takes its toll.
Again, the organisation of whom has contacted me, offers not only a promotional aspect of drug use, but the use of a helpline; somebody to talk to or ask advice from. Additionally, it is again, important that the promotional concept of the organisation is refreshed and therefore improved by the use of somewhat modern graphic work, not only eye catching, but attractive and interesting for all targeted ages to take notice of.
Graphic work of which I could create could include advertisement posters, leaflets; handouts etc. The design of a website or helpline advertisement. Poster designs could include the use of photography of victims and the consequences that had been caused by the use of drugs. Typography could connect within the designs of my work and therefore create somewhat a concept of attractive graphic work. Billboard designs and school related products and indeed, fashion related items, i.e. t shirt prints, bag prints and hats could again, become a successful piece of graphic work in terms of promotion for the organisation.
Furthermore, not only as a designer am I responsible for creating a range of products to present to the client, I am also responsible for creating an emotion throughout the work, somewhat an emotion that will in hope, raise the awareness and make a change.
Joshua Dunn - NHS
I choose to look closer into the public awareness campaign quite naively as I felt this offered to most ability to include my photography skills for a campaign that promoted a cause that was relevant. The beginning of this process was marked through the research I did into the variety of public campaigns that already existed. The interpretation of this question could’ve been broadened out to just about any area of the public domain possible. I, however, chose to focus my ideas and plans around the public health sector. As a student I was quite familiar with a lot of the shocking and memorable campaigns the NHS had done in the past so my interest immediately linked towards creating a similar shock tactic style campaign.
The NHS is of course, the UK’s largest public health sector that is funded by the tax payer, for the tax payer. The recognition therefore, that I was working with a company that supports and assists people confirmed my choice of direction. To break my direction down into stages and decipher the workable concepts I built together pages of research of current campaigns that were highly acclaimed in briefing the general public and causing them to consider the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. Smoking was the choice I chose to run with. It offered the most workability in my opinion for primary sourced imagery and strongest connection to campaigns I could reference. The concepts I drew up within this chosen direction were addiction, second-hand smoke, glamour, shock tactics and discrimination. All fairly broad and abstract elements that after receiving a small amount of feedback from students and staff, I decided to explore and run with them all.
My concept behind my own imagery came from the idea of the public not relying on serious processes of surgery when there older for the irresponsible mistakes people tend to make in there youth. The work I did on the right hand side is a response to a similar concept inspired by Kris McCaddon's work. I began to approach a stage in my development whereby I’d produced enough contextual research to support my ideas with both the work of photographers, designers (NHS Campaigns) and research into the factual elements of smoking. My direction then should have been to decide on a concept to run with, however, pleased with more than one of my ideas I began to take the two strongest forward.
Bailey Oates - Refelction Restaurant
My aim was to create a poster which radiates elegance for the Italian restaurant. My final image resulted in a image of a hand made Venetian mask which featured the colours associated with Italy, and a new logo with details of the restaurant. To ensure that I achieved the highest standard of professionalism in my final outcome I explored every aspect in detail, including complimentary colours.
I had several different concepts for the restaurant reflection. Mirror's, Reflections, Memories, Water and Italy. I felt that the best for me to take forward were Reflections and Italy as this provided me with both an abstract and literal take on the restaurant.
During my project I also looked at several different artists. Andy Warhol's technique of bright contrasting colours I felt would be good when experimenting with the use of colours in my Italian theme. Salvador Dahli's work on distortion provided a further abstract idea on the concept of reflections. I believed I could experiment with distorting images as if they were reflected in a mirror. Escher also inspired me to look at the use of shadow and light which I feel if used correctly may demonstrate a elegance to images which I was hoping to achieve. Francisco Infante Era was another artist who looked at natural form in creating images. This consisted of a quite literal take using mirrors. I believed I could experiment using mirrors and creating different reflections against different textured backgrounds.
I also did a lot of research on existing competition and logos. I believe that this is an important stage in any project as it gives you an idea on what works and how you want to approach your final image. Whilst researching I found that many existing restaurant logos consisted of just typography with mainly one character standing out. I also found that a change in the spacing between characters could transform the whole logo into a more professional design. I also found that menus featured blocks of colour which were shown in lines and normally featured behind a logo. This inspired me to keep my logo simple and also look at the use of colours and composition in my final image.
To create my main image I made a Venetian mask which featured colours from the Italian flag. I then added detail by glueing small beads around a line of pattern. Like most Venetian masks I then added feathers around the sides which were also the same colours as the Italian flag.
Once finished I took pictures of my mask against a white background. This was to emphasize the colours of the mask. I explored different techniques in editing but decided that I wanted to keep the originality of the mask so that it was appealing to my target audience.
Composition was also a important element in my final piece so that it met the needs of my target audience. I believed that the landscape composition was best as it gave a modern take on my image without being too over the top. When happy I began to add blocks of colour which was influenced by my competition research on restaurant menus. Many of the menus included more neutral colours such as brown, beige and cream tones. This complimented my work as it didn't clash and also as it didn’t steal the focus away from the intended main image.
I began to feel that my work was too abstract and that it didn’t directly link to a restaurant. Whilst researching menus I found that many featured images of cutlery. Earlier in my project I had experimented with Andy Warhol inspired images which focused on cutlery which contrasted with the background in a bright colour. I decided that I wanted to keep with the same colour scheme of neutral tones so I changed the images to contrast but not as vibrant. This worked as it didn’t draw the viewers attention from the main focus but balanced out the white space.
I added my finished logo to the final composition I ensured that it was large enough to balance out the mask. The logo was simple so It worked well against the Venetian mask.
My final image was vibrant therefore the neutral colours worked well in creating a professional elegant poster which was suitable for my target audience.
Tom Green - Reflection Restaurant
The exam question I chose was ‘Reflection’ this was to revitalise a restaurant in a fashionable way by creating a poster to advertise the restaurant, which contained details and imagery. I am looking to promote the restaurant in a fashionable and modern way aiming at a target audience of around 20-30. I started by research four concepts that could be the theme of my restaurant the concepts I chose were distortions, reflections in food, English theme and shadow and light. I chose these four concepts as I starting point as I felt they all links to the restaurant and the name of in abstract and literal ways.
I took a lot of images of an effect of distortions within typography from the influence of Bernard Lodge. I printed out typography on A3 paper of the restaurant name ‘Reflection’ where I then put a variety of wine glasses in front of it to create a distorted effect. I took many different composition ideas where I could then take a selection of them to use within my development. I used a san serif font for the typography as is think the typography needs to be more clear and simple as the abstract distorted effect may not work as well. I then edit the image to get a good lighting effect to bring out the composition also darkening the typography within the image to make it stand out. I think this worked very well and links to both my theme and a restaurant and is a very good composition to include for my final piece. I think experimenting with the right logo that I produced and colours it could be a very strong final composition.
Ben robinson - 120 Years of Crufts
I wanted to tackle the theme of an event and decided to create posters to advertise the 2011 Crufts Dog Show. I created a series of simple posters featuring commands that dogs respond to. These could be featured outside relevant buildings such as a Travel Lodge for 'Stay' or a newsagents for 'Fetch'. The final design is a more literal outcome featuring images of my dog.

Bailey Oates- Recycled Fashion My Brief was to create a poster to advertise Liverpool Fashion week. I wanted the design to have a theme of Autumn weather. (awaitinng text) |
Joshua Dunn - Recycled Fashion Recycling clothes seems to be a very popular trend that’s emerging throughout young people and fashion conscious individuals as they seek to re-capture some of the old and somewhat vintage styles from previous decades. A particular example of what has become a strong influence on my work is a company titled ‘the why not associates’. The company itself are British based graphic design company with a passion for design and commercial success. They recently released a book on the companies first ten years in industry and it’s from obtaining that knowledge that I became apparent to there style and there creativity. The work that was particularly influential is there light based imagery. When I first saw their various book covers I recorded some the aspects I liked and fell in love with the beauty that is captured within moving light which is what initially caused me to undergo my own primary interpretation. I began then to link the idea of light with its precious properties and how we can take it for granted in terms of usage. In a way it comes back to this concept of precious re-usage and consideration of natural elements. The why not associates then went on to influence my work in terms of typographic elements and even the incorporation of light movement and capturing light in order to portray letters and simple words. The outcomes from my own interpretations became stronger and more concise through practise and re shooting on location and off location. |

Chloe Franklin - Glastonbury Festival Advert My brief was to design new and refreshing advertising material for Glastonbury festival. The original founder Michael Eavis was leaving the creative committee for the festival after 40 years and so they wanted new and interesting ideas to reinvent the festival. I was asked to design a poster to promote the festival and also a logo to print onto wristbands for festival goers. “As we have previously discussed we want to reinvent the Glastonbury idea for 2011, and we intend to do this through the merchandising and advertising material, as we celebrated our 40th anniversary last year there is a lot to live up to in terms of the festival ‘hype’. Also our founder Michael Eavis is stepping down as organiser to make way for a new generation and this ties in with our plans to reinvent the festival.
I chose a number of my original photographs that really stood out and cut them out roughly using the pen tool in Adobe Illustrator then layering them together to create a photographic collage effect. At this point the work looked quite bland and I wanted to add some brighter colours to the work to enhance it and make the work really stand out. I had used teal throughout my work and wanted to add it in to complement but slightly clash with the red of my logo, using a gradient I placed this into the background behind my collage of imagery. |

Demi Wilson - Liverpool Fashion Week Poster I have been asked by the organisers of Liverpool Fashion week to produce a way of advertising their event not just in Liverpool, but around the world. I will start by analysing my brief, and then go on to the use of mind maps so that I can put all my ideas together and competition research so that I can see what competition Liverpool Fashion Week has. I have chosen to do a vintage/autumn theme for the advertisements. The organisers of this event are looking for imaginative and appealing graphics for the popular cities that would be interested in Liverpool Fashion Week. My target audience will be women and men from the ages between 16 and 45 who are interested in fashion and keeping up with the latest trends. I will start by taking photographs that fit in with my concept and then choosing out of these my favourite and best ones that I could use in my final piece. I will also do some secondary research that will help me with the competition that is already out and being promoted and advertised, and also typography and artist research that will help me get ideas for my own final piece. I will then go on to start to develop my ideas and experiment with different materials and my own photographs and drawings. I will then develop these even further and come up with my final piece with both my imagery and typography. |
Jennifer Holme - 2010 World Netball Series Advert
World Netball Series is a very popular event and it is being held in Liverpool. They need new advertising poster to show people what it is all about and where it is so more people will come and be interested. The posters need to be eye catching and informative as it will be for people having a quick scan over and hopefully taking note and then turning up. As well as designing a poster, I was also asked to create a brand new logo that is strong and unique using interesting typography.
For my final piece, I focused mainly on the images and the positioning that would catch the eye the most. I wanted the typography to be clear and understanding as well as appealing for all ages. I think my final piece defiantly is and many people would understand it clearly. I used many different techniques to get the best final work I could. It worked out really well and I am pleased with the final outcome I came up with.
Daniel Brown - 2011 London Fashion Week
I intend to create an aspect of promotional material which portrays the event 'London Fashion Week' for the year of 2011. Perhaps in poster format, the promotion requires detailed relation to the concept of 'Fashion' in particular, either in an abstract or literal format. In this essay I will investigate how artists control fashion through the use of colour, manipulation and presentation to reveal character.
Additionally, I will also explore the relationship that fashion in particular has with pattern, colour and technique, through both a literal, and an abstract format. In order to continue through the creation process of this project.
