Summer Show 2016

Eleanor Jaeger - TokiYume (時夢)

The working title of my project will be TokiYume (時夢), TokiYume (The name of my fictional brand) meaning candy dream in Japanese. It will be a fictional brief on branding a Japanese street fashion company. The specific fashion being sweet/gothic Lolita fashion. In this brief I will work towards producing a logo, stationery and promotional posters/images/advertisements. I will be sewing dresses and designing prints to use on models in my photography for promotional images. I’m planning to use is mainly photography, pen/ink/marker illustration, and digital image making on Adobe Photoshop/Illustrator. This fashion is a huge industry and has lots of detail and culture involved, so it's important to get everything right during development for it to seem genuine.

A lot of my influence is going to come from other Lolita fashion brands, specifically sweet ones like Angelic Pretty. Angelic pretty is the market leader for this style of fashion, and the prints and themes of their dresses and

products are very girly and sweet and cute, yet have huge amounts of detail too.I will also be taking inspiration from Moi Meme Moitie. This brand is almost the opposite of Angelic Pretty as it is very, very gothic and dark, and their prints contain things like church architecture and horror symbols. I would like to somehow make my work meet in the middle of these two subjects of Gothic and Sweet. I would also like to take the old school side of Moi Meme Moitie’s products into my designing. Both brands and the Lolita fashion in general has been going since the early eighties. I will be using things like sweets to take photos of for backgrounds, but mainly dress prints.

Reviewing and evaluating my final major project will be done by either me and/or my peers in my class. Different aspects like development, execution of digital work and final outcomes will be evaluated individually and then will be put together in a larger evaluation. I may ask tutors as well as I’d need a wider range of opinions and reviews.

Molly Gibbons - Wallflower Tearoom

For my final major project, I will be taking on the responsibly of branding a new traditional tearoom. Throughout this project, I will be working alongside the future owner of the tearoom, to get feedback on my ideas and designs. I will be designing a new company identity, including a new logo and different ways of advertising including, posters and business cards. I would also like to produce certain products that would be used within the business.

As a starting point, I will research the branding of popular tearooms and cafés, and look at their advertising techniques. I will also research different artists and designers and potentially use their work as inspiration throughout the project. As research, I went to a tearoom myself and looked at the company identity. I studied their menus, business cards etc. and the interior of the tearoom itself to see how everything is linked together. I think it’s very important that throughout my project that I ensure there is a clear link between the tearoom branding and name.

I plan to use a range of different techniques to create various outcomes. For a new logo, I will use hand rendered work along with digital programmes to create a professional finish. The use of collage and hand rendered work would be appealing. For the different forms of advertising, I’d like to use my photography skills to take a range of high quality images that could be used in a poster. I’d also use digital techniques to design products such as menus and business cards.
It will be vital for me to keep to strict deadlines and timescales during the project, to ensure all my work is completed and up to a high standard. I will use my time outside of college effectively.

Once I have finished the project, I will evaluate my work in a number of ways. I will critique my own work as well as using my peers for their opinions and ways to improve. I will use my tutors and other teachers within the art and design department, for professional feedback. I will also ask a range of people outside of college, who are likely to visit a tearoom of café, and get their feedback on my work.

Christopher Anderton - Tea and Harmony

I will be branding a sustainable tea company. The company is called Tea and Harmony and will focus on producing tea in the most sustainable way; this unique edge on the company has to be put across in both the Corporate Identity and Product Identity. The company will also fly under the Fairtrade banner meaning that they give back to their tea farmers and their surrounding community’s. My target audience will be people that enjoy drinking healthy organic tea.

I will research other tea companies branding by looking at their product designs and corporate identity. I will also research product designers

that specialise in company branding. I will also research artists and designers and analyse their work capturing primary imagery that relates to concepts and ideas that I exoplore.

I plan to produce a suitable logo and a poster that will advertise 'Tea and Harmony'. I will also design more corporate items such as business cards, letterheads and compliment slips.

Once I have finished the project, I will evaluate my work. I will ask for feedback from my peers and tutors, to fine tune my final outcome into the best possible piece.

Jordan Potter-Egerton - Level 1

I have chosen to rebrand a computer company called Level 1. I have spoken to the owner, Nigel, who has advised me on which directon he is looking to take the company and some of the history of where he started.

"I started the company on 30th Sept 1995. I had worked for another computer retailer for several years prior who went bust in the August of that year. Since the age of 11 I had always been interested in computers (mainly games at that age) and it really was all that I knew so I decided to open my own games shop rather than work for someone else. Initially, I only sold PC and video games but got very bored, very quickly. I had built up a phenomenal knowledge of PC`s/Windows etc so it seemed logical to build computers and offer a repair service. For 10-15 years the games thrived and was very profitable, but slowly the internet, supermarkets and rival games shops squeezed all of the profit out of the games market for me. Over the last 2 years, I have been reducing (an now almost to zero) the games part of the shop and now concentrate on PC repairs and builds. I will be working towards producing a corporate idntity aimed at a more computer base compan which fixes and builds computers which Nigel is looking to expand to as a company."

I will research other computer companies who focus more on the fixing and buying computers. I will also research artists and designers who design corporate identities not just for computer companies but to advertise different products or services, mainly creating corporate identities. I will then use this research to impact on my ideas. I will start by researching different aspects linked to "Level 1" such as: At the top, progression etc.

I will experiment with a range of techniques. Mono printing, Etching, Drawing, Collaging etc. As well as digital techniques and processes: using Photoshop to manipulate imagery, illustrator to create vector based imagery, shapes and layers. I will also use photography to capture primary images which will help me to develop my ideas further and to show visual changes throughout the project.

While developing my ideas through the process of this project I can get feedback from peers but also my client which will help me to improve my work and ideas and create an outcome that the client will be happy with as well as me.

Amelia Capper - Atomic Cosmetics

For my Final Major Project, I will work towards producing an identity, a logo and branding for a new cosmetics brand. The USP for this brand will be a focus on colourful, intense and highly pigmented products. This is a USP that isn't commonly found in high street or high-end makeup brands as most brands focus on natural, subtler shades. This will set me apart from the competition and open up my brand to a different, untapped audience. I have chosen this proposal for my Final Major Project as it will allow me to develop my skills in Publication and Print design, and Advertising and Marketing; these are the areas of Graphic Design I am particularly interested in and it's where I think I have produced my strongest work in past projects. My target audience will be the high end market but target towards younger buyers, ranging from teenagers to young adults.

My starting points for this project will be to research existing cosmetics companies, including how they brand themselves, how they advertise their products and how they layout their stores. I will do this by researching cosmetics companies' websites and advertising campaigns, visiting makeup stores in person and by looking at makeup casing and

packaging. I will also look at the work of artists to influence my work and give me ideas as to what techniques I can use. I will begin to generate ideas by creating detailed mind maps and later concept pages.

To create my work, I will use digital techniques, such as the Adobe software, as well as a wide range of hand rendered techniques like drawing, painting, mixed media and printing. I will experiment with different media and processes to see which is the most successful. I will later combine practical processes with digital software. I also intend to use Photography in this project as is key to show clear images of the products I am selling. I will spend the first 1-2 weeks of the project generating ideas and concepts for my brand. I will then spend the next 4-5 weeks developing my chosen concept and collecting any primary photography I need. I will spend the remainder of the project creating my final imagery and preparing an exhibition.

I will evaluate my work throughout the project through self and peer review by showing my work to other students. I will also do multiple formal presentations at different points in the project, presenting my ideas, my development and my final outcome to my tutors. Finally, I will produce a written evaluation at the end of the project.

George Kempster - In Between the Waves

I am going to produce an identity for a new and upcoming music magazine entitled 'In Between The Waves', including: a logo, a slogan and primary colours, focusing on the Rock/Alternative/Indie genres of the music spectrum and my target will be for individuals who are interested and enjoy this style of music. This magazine will be published in every major city within the UK. It will be my job to design the front cover and also the back cover of the first issue for the magazine and also produce innovative and creative forms of promotional items and evidence them in public. During the process of this project I must explore and discover different types of layouts, music magazine designers and explore techniques on how to create a successful logo and slogan.

My starting influences for this project are: Ricardo Gonzalez, Tom Bornarel & Dave Draws. My contextual references are as followed: Ricardo Gonzalez, Tom Bornarel & Dave Draws. I began my research by gathering leaflets, primary images and names of local relevant artists. I will be mixing a lot of hand-rendered and physical processes with digital. Some handrendered processes may include: model making, 3D sculpture, mixing ink, paints, quink and water together, collages or illustrations from primary imagery.

Through this I hope to generate a variety of different outcomes which will express the content and ethos of the magazine to the target audience. I will evaluate my finished piece of work and ask for feedback from my tutors and peers in order to create the best response possible.

Matthew Toft - Spectrum Blinds

For my final major project I had been given the task of a live brief to brand and advertise ‘Spectrum Blinds and Curtains’ a family run soft furnishings business based in Manchester. They have asked me to create a new brand identity to modernise the business which will appeal to a broad target audience as well as an advertisement which will accompany the new rebrand. Spectrum Blinds and Curtains is a family run business who have more than 15 year’s experience in the industry. They have many different products which can be created in thousands of different colours and patterns to create stylish window coverings. For this brief I will be working towards creating a logo, a branding pack, a colour scheme for the business and also an advertisement with the new branding.

I will research existing blind and curtain company logos as well as branding and advertising. Once I have gathered my research I will then begin brainstorming different ideas that I could use for the brand. From the mind maps I will then take a couple of literal and abstract ideas and develop them. For inspiration I will create primary imagery as well as researching other designers and website like Behance to also help inspire my work.

To create the branding for my live brief I will be using illustrator the most to create the logo and the advert which will be in a vector format so the work can be scaled to any size as well as Photoshop which I may use to manipulate imagery to look as professional as possible. As well as using these computer based processes I may also use hand rendered techniques to create different patterns and textures to represent materials.

Throughout the project I will consistently evaluate my work in many ways. I will evaluate my work by gaining feedback from the client, reviewing and analysing my work as I progress through the project, gain critiques from presentations and also publicly exhibiting my final composition.

Harriett White - Changing Places Agency

I will be creating an advertising campaign promoting my own Online Estate Agents. I will create a whole new brand identity that was inspired from the company Crosslane. Looking at competitors and their strengths and weaknesses and the audience aimed at, this will help me understand the market more.

Artist influences and general research is really important to establish as this then can stem my ideas. I will also look at brochures and leaflets from estate agents that I can then use as inspiration for advertising and how that is communicated across to the audience, This can then help me see how home owners are persuaded to sell and comparing soft and hard sell within that.

I will be using traditional and computer media from photography, fine art etc. I need to meet the expectations of the criteria. It is important that I use the early stages of research so I can then start creating my ideas and developing opportunities for primary sources, Including an in depth mind map/s for my new online estate and anything else relevant, choosing four ideas as a minimum to create concepts for. Through photography, typography, media etc. I will create and explore all possibilities for my work. This will also be the time to create my logo, slogan for the ad campaign, and the ad campaign and company name with alternatives.

To review my work in a critical/ analytical way I will look at getting feedback from my peers, family and clients that I am in touch with through this project. Making sure to review the criteria I need to meet and if I have done that. The deadlines will allow us to present our work for each stage creating feedback.

Conor Silver - Subliminal Streetwear

I am going to be creating a brand of clothing. I am going to be designing a logo for the brand, and will be creating T-shirts. My target audience for my clothing brand will be for skate generation. I will be creating the brand logo and also different designs and prints which can go onto the clothing. As I am currently working in the local skate park in Warrington, I will get feedback and advice from the manager and will also be able to advertise my new upcoming brand in the skate shop there.

I will be looking at different popular skate brands for influences which the skate culture are wearing such as Supreme and Vans. My starting points for this project is doing lots of research into skate culture and the elements that influence it.

I will be doing a lot of hand rendered work including drawing, painting using mirrors for effects and all sorts of arts and crafts work, I will then be scanning the work into the computer and then editing and manipulating in Photoshop and illustrator. I intend to do a photoshoot of my final designs on appropriate models so as to create the right look and feel of my brand for my final print.

I will get reviews from my teachers and my peers who will give me improvements to make and will evaluate my work to help me produce the best possible outcome.

Ellen McGoran - Manchester Drum Centre

For my final major project, I will be rebranding the company Manchester Drum Centre. Throughout this project I will be liasing with the manager of the company to work towards the best possible outcome. I will be creating a whole new identity for the shop, but trying to incorporate the same colour schemes so the branding has a familiarity. I will be designing a new company identity. I would like to have a clear concept that is unique to the idea of drums. The rebranding will be used by the company and will be used on all their advertising.

As a starting point I will research previous branding from other drum shops/companies and the surround area. I will also do research on various artists, typographers and designers to hopefully use as inspiration throughout the project to work towards my final piece and ensure I represent the company right.

I will be using traditional, Photography and computer media and incorporating these all together. I will need to be taking primary source pictures earlier on so I can develop ideas, as this is important. I will be doing research on artist's influences etc. this will include Including mind maps. One on the actual company and then four concepts. This will help me develop ideas and start to gather the relevant primary sources. From here I can experiment with images that will go towards my final poster, create different logo's which I can choose from and a slogan for the the company and final poster. Finally pulling all my different components I have been developing to refine and pick what has worked best to create my final poster.

When I have finished the overall project I will be critical towards my work with help from peers with their opinions and find ways to improve. I will also ask my tutors and other tutors who haven't seen my work before for their critique of the poster so I have it to highest possible standard. I will finally ask people from outside college including the employers and employees of Manchester Drum Centre to see if I have correctly represented the company.

Alan Horowski - Italian Express

Italian Express is a pizza and pasta takeaway based in Manchester, Worsley and Stockton Heath with delivery choice. They have taken fast food delivery to the next level as they believe everyone should have the pleasure of eating restaurant quality food in the comfort of their own home. What makes Italian Express different to other fast food outlets is they use only fresh ingredients, prepared and cooked on the premises in an open kitchen. They have been rewarded with five stars for the quality of the food in Stockton Heath from Just Eat which is the highest rate.

I will research the branding of popular pizza take-away's and restaurants andexplore advertising techniques they are using to get their customer's attention. I will look at artists and designers and potentially use their work to inspire my own. I will look at creating a successful logo that will be simple but creative. I went to one of the stores based in Stockton Heath myself and looked at the company identity. I studied their menu, leaflets and the way they advertise, and I am going to develop it to make it stand out from the other take away's.

I will focus on using a range of different techniques to create outcomes. I will use hand rendered work alongside digital software like Illustrator and Photoshop. I will design products such as leaflets, carry bags and business cards. It will be vital for me to stick to strict deadlines and timescales during the project, to ensure all my work is completed and up to a high standard. I will use my time outside of college effectively just to make sure I don't fall behind.

After the project has finished I will evaluate all of my work in a number of ways. I will critique my work as well as using my peers for their opinions and ways to make it better. For professional feedback I will be consulting my tutors and teachers from art and design department to ensure my work is completed to a professional standard. People outside of college will also be involved in giving me feedback.

Sam Keenan - Oakwood School

I am rebranding Oakwood Avenue Community primary school, I will put the logo on school jumpers and book bags etc. to show how it looks when in use and it will also appear in the final poster that I create to promote the school. I will begin by producing a large mind map of all the early ideas I have before then creating a minimum of four concept sheets that I will then present to get advice before taking one forward. I will have to create a logo and poster that appeals to multiple target audiences as I would like the children of the school to like it and understand it as well as the teachers and parents, so that it persuades them that Oakwood is the best school.

I will have to research to see what kind of logo's are being used in primary schools in my area and worldwide to try and get a few ideas before I start producing my own work. I will also have to research artists and designers that create logos and posters who produce work related to my chosen

concepts. I will need to look at the artists and designers who influence me and explain what I like about their work and how I will incorporate that in to my work if I can do so. Throughout the project I will ensure I use a variety of techniques, I will work on the computers to produce my logo and poster however I can experiment with drawings and scanning work in throughout the project. I will also try a variety of mixed media techniques that could potentially make their way in to my work.

I will evaluate my FMP in multiple ways, I will firstly self-assess the work that I have created and refer back to the brief and concepts when I do so to make sure I haven't took too different of a route with the work I produce, I will ask my peers and tutors to look at the work I have created and ask them for their opinions on what they like and dislike about my work. I think if I evaluate my work in all of these ways I will have enough constructive criticism to go on and produce a high quality piece of work.

Amy Lowther - SP Dental Laboratory

For my final major project I have been given the task to re-brand and create an advert for 'SP Dental Laboratory.' SP Dental Laboratory is a family run business of dental technicians based in Warrington. The business does the manufacture of dental crown and bridge appliances. For this brief I will work towards a re-brand for the business and also an advert. This will include a new logo and other business essentials. I also have an extension task of creating a website or app front page design.

A starting point will be to do research and visit the business and look at what their current branding and advertising is. I will also do initial research and look at other branding packs and advertising made by other designers for inspiration. I will then mindmap to develop ideas, I will display literal and abstract ideas within the mindmap. From this I will make four concept sheets and I will then go on to develop these concepts as I need to when I have chosen which idea/s to take forward.

I will be working mainly in Adobe Illustrator. I will also use Adobe Photoshop to make the branding look professional by manipulating it onto different branding packs. As well as the computer based method I will also create hand rendered work for the advert and branding. To make sure I am organised and work to deadlines I have created a timescale that I will work to.

Throughout this project I will present my work to peers and tutors in order to gain feedback at different stages of my development. I will evaluate my work through self evaluation but also from feedback given by tutors and peers. I will also be in contact with the client getting feedback about if they like what I am creating and also any changes they would like me to make and overall general feedback. I may also make a questionnaire to gain feedback from other members of the public. Also at the end of the project my work will be featured in a public exhibition.

Tom Savage - Troxler

My project proposal is to create a teaser campaign for a car that possesses a stylish aesthetic inside and out as well as it being eco-friendly and efficient, to help change the perception of eco-friendly cars to the general UK public. Also the concept motor company with a goal of offering affordable eco-friendly cars to the UK population. Their target market is people who care about the environment but also care about the look and drive of the car. It will be a medium sized engine making the age range typically around 25-55 year olds.

I will focus on the marketing and advertisement and trying to make the product appeal to its target audience. I intend to try out and use a lot of different media and techniques such as Photoshop, illustrator, photography and 3d design software as well as.

I will evaluate my FMP and get feedback from my peers and tutors on my project to help me achieve the best final outcome possible.
